OPOTIKI BOROUGH

Our Own Correspondent) .

RUMOURED ENDEAVOUR TO UPSET COUNCIL. ELECTION LISTS ALLEGEDLY USED

(From

Opotiki, Friday. There was a rumour current in Opotiki recently that a move would be made to upset the borough council elections on the ,' grounds that printed listsr with the names of certain candidates on them ,were handed out to electors. Whe-n one of the gentlemen alleged to have distributed the lists was /interviewed by a "Post" representa- ! ti ve he admitted that electors had (been in receipt of such lists, but that the lists which had caused the controversy were in possession of the electors weeks before the polling day. 'He stated that he also had heard the rumour and that he had even been -told that one of the unsuccessful can'didates had said that if only he could himself gain possession of one of these lists he would take steps to 'have the election upset. His reply had been to send a dozen 'of these lists to the gentleman concerned, but he had heard nothing since. A f urther rumour that this was the reason why the swearing-in of the ;new couneillors had not taken place was discountenanced by the town clerk who said that it had always been customary for the swearing-in cere--mony to be held about a fortnight after the elections in order to ailow objections to be raised if desired.
