A Bit More Comfort With the approach of winter th'e Rotorua County Council chamber bore a -different aspect at its May meeting. Bell at the commencement of the second term on Monday, May 22. t Smoking at Council Meetings One of the customs of the Rotorua Borough Council is the denial of the solace of tobacco to those attendinguntil permission has been given hy the .mayor. When the mayor withdrew yesterday whilst his honorariuni was heing discussed the first. thing that happened. when Cr. Johnson the deputy mayor took the chair was a request from almost the whole of the counc'illors "May we smoke?" Permission was granted and when the mayor returned he was greeted with smiles wreathed in smoke. School Visiting Committee The following members of the Ro- | torua School Committee have been appointed to visit the school durin'g the next two months with power to, to authorise general maintenance work in the school buildings. Messrs R. Griffiths, N. M. Keane and H. W-il-kinson. Celebrations Due "I think that she- would like some repairs done to the road this week — the settlers are having a 21st birthday party soon and there will he a lot of traffic," said a couneillor at the Rotorua County Council meeting yesterday. "Well I think they should, have it. They are hard-working settlers and they deserve a bit of pleasure," rejoined -another. The work is to he done. Help Still Required The Rotorua Ladies' Hockey Association are still in need of a number of hillets for South Island players before it will be possible for it to make application for the annual Dominion tourney to be held in September next. The majority of billets so far offered have been provided hy boardinghouse proprietors but to date little response has been received from honseholders. Although many business men have offered valuable donations or guarantees to the association, many others have so far failed to resp'ond in any way to the appeal. Force of Habit Much amusement was caused at yesterday's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council hy Cr. Goodson, who, as chairman of the Fire Board and Racing Club Committee, has had the putting of many motions. After several motions had been put he anticipated the mayor with "carried." Open Confession "I notice a lot of our back roads are going back. They are not getting enough attention," Mr. H. P. Ford, chairman of the Rotorua County Council at yesterday's meeting. Tour of Inspection The members of the newly elected Rotorua Borough Council are to make a tour of inspection of th'e whole borough on Monday next. The opening of the corner shop as an up-to-date small goods, cake- shop and dining and tea rooms will provide visitors and residents with yet another up-to-date serviee. The Cor'ner Shop will sell Hellaby's small goods, Stormont's cakes and other ;proved lines*
