Northland Trotting Club's annual meeting held at Cambridge to-day, and the publie who braved the elemerits had a bad time. However the racing was interesting enough, seve'rsii elose fiiiishes adding zest to the day. "Darkie" Broughton put up something of. a reeord by driving in three winners making his tally seven out of 14'iraces and Wilfrod Johnstone won two" races, making six for the meeting: , Bonnie Direct won the first race with, tllree tiekets on her to win and paid over two score, and' Tryment, after running second in the first race won the Waipu and paid double figures. One Out of Box Bonnie Direct in her first start in the North Island upset the pot properly in the Dargaville Handicap, winning after getting badly away and being well back to the turn. Homebrew was first to strike a gait and led Maud Chenault, Shining Metal, Camelia, Dillon Audubon and Demand. Camelia went to the front in the back stretch from Tryment, Homebrew, Worthy Chief, Shining Metal and Maud Chenault. Turning for home Tryment was ahead of Worthy Chief, Maud Chenault, Homebrew and Camelia. Bonnie Direct came very fast to top off Tryment with Worthy Chief next. Then came Homebrew, Demand, Shining Metal and Maud Chenault. There was only £3 on Bonnie Direct who paid over two score for a win and a tenner on her for a place another good dividend resulting. Tryment carried £14 and £20, and Worthy Chief £51 and £54. It was a complete upset of f orm.

Wiriwhata Wanders In Making up his handicap easily Wiriwhata, assisted by the breaking of other entrants, accounted for the Whangarei Handicap easily from Golden Huia with Colleen Murphy third. Just before the race heavy rain fell and the track cut to pieces. Golden Huia was first out from Colleen Murphy, Nelson Chief and Wiriwhata, Autumn Lu failing to strike a gait. After half a mile Golden Huia led Colleen Murphy, Wiriwhata, Nelson Chief and Kohewah, who started skipping a bit. Golden Huia commenced to break up and Colleen Murphy went to the front with Wiriwhata also in tow and thus for a while until Colleen Murphy also hit the air. Wiriwhata ran on joined by Golden Huia who again broke and trotting solidlj Wiriwhata won by five lengths witl Colleen Murphy ten lengths behinc Golden Huia. Mattie Herbilwyn wa: fourth, Kohewah and Autumn Lu following. The winner who carried £23 10: and £33 was the only one to trot without mistake. Very Thrilling Finish The finish of the Kawakawa was a real thriller, Wee Machine just failing to beat Te Mahanga after a great tussle. Te Mahanga was first to strike his straps from Edna Worthy, Fisher, Alexis (who was slcw to mov.e), Mythorpe and Wee Machine. Te Mahanga and Mythorpe mad 3 the running frqm Edna Worthy and Fish-
» er with Alexis and Wee Machine. The last named commenced a run at the top where Mythorpe was done with ^ and in a punishing finish Te Mahanga just won from Wee Machine with Fisher under the whip a head away and Alexis a neck back. Then ' came Edna Worthy and My .Thorpe. It was a clinking finish and with a«bit of luck Wee Machine would have won, but Broughton's driving made the little extra difference. This made the fifth win for Wilfred Johnstone. Te Mahanga carried £176 and £75 10s, Wee Machine £65 and £51, and Fisher £75 10s and £51. NORTHLAND HANDICAP 1/1-ENAWAH (A. W. Wilfred Johnstone's Wonderful Trot Wilfred Johnstone notched his sixth win and his third with Enawah, when she made up her handicap quickly and took the Northland Handicap from Kewpie's Triumph who just failed to see it out. As usual, Brent Zolock went to the lead from Prince Pedro and Carnui with Kewpie's Triumph, Brentlight, Pageant and Enawah. At the end of a mile Brent Zolock was still in charge from Prince Pedro, Kewpie's Triumph, Carnui and Brentlight with Enawah and • Pageant closing up. Brent Zolock was done with soon after and Prince "Pedro ran up but was soon supplanted by Kewpie's Triumph, Carnui drop- ' ping back and Enawah running up. When the top was reached Enawah had run up second to Kewpie's Tri- • umph. Enawah went on to win eomfortably from Kewpie's Triumph by a length with Prince Pedro a similar distance back, Pageant being fourth and the rest pulling up. Enawah carried £156 10s and £77 !l0s, Kewpie's Triumph £36 and £45, and Prince Pedro, £77 and £67 10s. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP, lm 5f. Limit 3.50. 1/1—RAIDER (F. J. Fred Smith's First Win After running without luck all the meeting Fred Smith got a turn when he got Raider home ahead of Pukemiro, but he was fortunate for Eleawah who was leading most of the way broke his hopples when turning for home and broke up. Rey de Quest
moved off best m a start m which Jackie Thorpe was sideways. When they settled down Rey de Quest led Raider, Eleawah, Poi, Jackie Thorpe and Pukemiro. Eleawah ran to the front and soon had a ten-length break on Raider with Rey de Quest (breaking) and Pukemiro. Raider was still a bit behind Eleawah, when the latter broke his hopples, and went on to win by two lengths from the fast finishing Pukemiro with Jackie Thorpe who went steadily third, foliowed by Poi, Eleawah and Rey de Quest. Raider who was coupled with Poi, carried £123 and £76 10s and Pukemiro £77 and £62 10s. WAIPU HANDICAP, lm. 5f. Limit 4.3.

Tryment Shows Consistency After running second in the first race, Tryment always looked to be going well in the Waipu which she t won from the hot favourite Red Hope with Our Summer, who broke a good bit, third. It was a good finish, but i Red Hope faltered in the last chain. Both Tryment and Our Summer lost ground at the start and Worthy Chief was the early leader from Red Hope and May Chenault. Red Hope took up the pacemaking from Our Sum•mer, May Chenault, Tryment and Worthy Chief. Tryment went up to the leader at the top after Donum had come with a rattle, but broke and Tryment lasted long enough to beat Red Hope with Our Summer third and Worthy Chief fourth. The rest were well back. Tryment carried £25 10s and £36 10s, and paid double figures. Red Hope £176 10s and £89, and Our Summer £84 10s and £72. HIKURANGI HANDICAP, li miles. Our Peter's Good Win i "Darkie" Broughton made it his seventh winning drive when he piloted Our Peter to victory in the Hikurangi Handicap, and thus won half 'the races in the two days. Homeward was a hot favourite, but Rangihau moved off well and led to the bottom of the straight where he went all to pieces and Free Logan took up the running from Our Peter, Pukemiro, Homeward and Kelp. Free Logan was still in command at the straight entrance .from Homeward with Our Peter coming up on the outside. Our Peter won handily by a length from Free Logan with Homeward third, Pukemiro fourth and Kelp next, Rangihau being pulled up. Our Peter carried £117 and £59 10s, Free Logan £79 and £34 and Homeward £289 10s and £105 10s. The Tote Figures The totalisator handled £4565 for the day, compared with £5927 10s two years ago when the club held its last meeting.
