Official Recount of Votes The task of recounting votes cast at Wednesday's election was commenced yesterday by the returning officer, Mr. .W. A. McLean, and »his •staff and had not been completed last evening. The work ds a considerahle one as in additlon to recounting the voting for both the council.and Hospital . Board elections the rolls have also to be checked to satisfy the law •against the possibility of double voting. It is expected that the work will be completed to-day. Thanks for Hospitality The thanks of the Napier Swim- 1 ming and Life Saving.. Club to the offieials and memhers of the Rotorua Swimming Club for the hospitality extended its team atl a recent carnival was received during the week by the president of the club, Mr. W . L. jRichards. The, Napier Glub hopes to he ahle to similarly entertain the Rotorua swiinmers during the next season. Unable to Thank Electors In connection w]ith Wednesday's election, the supporters of Mr. Alfred Warbrick will regret to hear that although he was present at the council chambers during the announcement of the preliminary results of th'e election he f ound it necessary , through indisposition, to seek medical gdvice and return home before the final result was made known. He was therefore unable to personally thank. those who supported his candidature.
Lawn Tennis Dance The Rotorua Lawn Tennis Club has decided to hold its annual ball on May 31 in the Majestic Ballroom. The trophies won during the^ yeai will be presented at this function. Age of School Attendance Some doubt exists among parents of the eligibility of children under the age of six years to attend primary schools. It should be noted that where a child attains the age of six years during any particular term it may be admitted at the commencement of that term. Children attaining the age of six years before August 21 next may, therefore, be admitted to sehool on May 22, when the next term opens. Rain Causes Slips Wednesday's heavy rain caused a further slip ,on the Waioeka Road and although service car traffic was delayed for about an hour yesterday morning it is understood that the road is now open to traffic. A small slip also occurred on the Mamaku Hill Road yesterday, but traffic was
not interrupted. Tennis Championships The Bay of Plenty Lawn Tennis Association is applying for the right to play the North Island tennis championships in Rotorua early next year. If this eventuates it will mean ^another important sporting fixture that will attract many players and visitors to the town for several days. At its last management committee • meeting, the Rotorua Lawn Tennis Club diseussed the matter and decided to guarantee the association to the extent of ten pounds against loss. Duck Seeks Sanctuary An example of the endurance oi the native grey duck and its sagacity in seeking sanctuary waters, was provided on the opening of the game shooting season on Monday when a lone duck, with one leg shattered and suffering from severe body wounds, drifted into the pond adjacent to the 'Sanatorium in the Government Grounds. The plight of the bird was 'observed and it was despatched by the Conservator of Fish and Game, rsMr. A. Kean. Rotorua Orphans' Club At a meeting of the committee of the Rotorua Orphans' Club held last eyening, it was decided to convene the annual meeting of the club for Thursday, May 18. The treasurer, Mr. A. Brown, reporteld. that the past year had been successful finaneially and also most successful in regard to the maintenance of membership and the standard of the programme arranged. It is anticipated that the success of the past year will be fully maintained during the coming session.
