mr. hutchison wins very close contest in auckland HAWKES BAY CHANGES The following are the, results of ithe mayoral elections held in the major centres yesterday In several municipalities, the retiring mayors were defeated. At Dunedin, Mr. R. S. Black, mayor for the past term, was defeated hy Rev. b. 1 G. Cox. Both Hawkes Bay ctentres, Napier and Hastings, deposed their ; retiring mayors in f avour of new nominees. In the case of Napier, Mr. »'C. 0. Morse, who was prominent during the aftermath of the earthqualc'e as chairman of the Citizens' Committee defeated Mr. Vigor Brown, for a number of years mayor of the borough and mayor during the 'qualce period. Mr. H- V. S. Griffiths, the retiring mayor of New Plymouth was defeated "by Mr. E. R. Y. Gilmour, while in the Hospital Board election at Palmerston North, Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., was defeated by Mr. J. Hodgens the Labour candidate who has twice- opposed him unsuccessfully for Parliamentary honours. Mr. A. E- Mahsf ord was elected to the mayoralty unopposed. ' In Auckland, the sitting mayor, Mr. G. "W. Hutchison had a small margin of votes over Mr. H. G. R. Mason^ M.P., in a very keen contest. Mr. D- G. Sullivan, M.P., was return'ed hy a good majority as mayor of Christchurch, while Wanganui and In-» vercargill both returned their sitting mayors. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop was re.turned unopposed in Wellington. Details are: —
