AN AVERAGE POLL ■- i FIViE NEW COUNCILLORS GIVEN VERDICT OF ELECTORS WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD SEAT PossihSy due to the fact that the weather conditions yesterday were ' anytning hut pleasant, only an average- poll was reg,istered in Rotorua in connection with the election of seven councillor-s to , constitufce the Rotorua Borough Council and one representative on the Waikato Hospital Board. ( From elarly in the morning, a .steady -stream of voters visited the various I booths and after the closing of -shops at midday the number of yoters steadily incre-ased and all booths were kept husy. Although soWe hundred votes below the previous record poll, yesterday 's pnllt, without the mayoralty contest was up to previousstandardd, mparly 1500 votes heing recorded out of 2779 persons eligibU to- vote. With -sixt^en candidates as against fourteen at the previous election, the resuLts were longer coming to hand and despite the adverse 1 1 weather a fairl crowd assembled at the Victoria Institute- and waited j good humourodly\ for the first returns.

With the anncunipement of the first return at 9 p.m. fipom the Peerless Hall, a cheer went up from the crowd assembled round the\ board and this return was quickly fc^llowed by those of the remaining hoobhs at the same hall. The early retui\"ns placed Mr. Johnson at the top of \the poll with a total of 667 votes, M!^r. F. Goodson being next with 559, an-'d this position was maintained to the e>nd. Results from Ranolf iS'treet were the next to come and following a long period of silenee t.he final returns was received from D evon Street leaving the preliminary count of the poll as follows: — Elected :!: Johnson, E.-T 881 Goodson, F 725 Banks, J r 712 French, G. Mr. Albert Smith, also a m ember of the retiring council was 1 leaded hy a small margin of 13 vote'S by Mr. G. Steele and was defeated. The Labour ticket was placed well down on the list, Mr. C. J- Tuck regiotering the highest vote to be placed twelflh. In the election of a r.epres entative on the Waikato Hospital Board, the first returns came From the county where the poll had closecl at 6 p.m. Here the voting was in fav our of Mr. J. Banks and with the acldition of the Rotorua voting- he maintained his lead to win the seat by a majority of 89 against Mr. T. Jac, kson.
