"ON WITH THE DANCE"
TEA ROOM PROPRIETOR FINED FOR FAILING TO CLOSE For carrying on a dance on Easter Saturday until Sunday morning, Francis Vernon Simmonds, a tearoom proprietor of Whaka, was fined by Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesUerday. At the same time the bench issued ;a warning that future offenders would be severely dealt with. Defendant pleaded guilty to SunI day trading. Senior-S'ergeant Carroll said that Simmonds had run a dance at Whaka until 12.35 a.m. on Sunday morning. There was a tearooms also in conjunction with the place. When the ^police arrived they found dancing in ' full swing. Defendant had previously been warned. Other dance halls ;were also in the habit of continuing . into Sunday morning. Mr. E. Roe, for defendant, said "that the tearooms were well conduct,ed" and were the main business. Oc- , easionally on holidays (the day of the ( offence was during Easter and he overlooked the time) defendant found difficulty in getting his patrons /out of the hall. There had only been . one previous case in the district. The bench said that there was no ,'excuse and that defendant should Uiave closed up. If there were more /cases of this nature, a substantial j penalty would be inflicted. Simmonds \was fined £1 and costs 12/-.
