LORD BLEDISLOE VISITS WELL KNOWN CHIEF FAREWELL TO RAROTONGA

H.M.S. Diomede, May 1. The Diomede left Rarotonga at 7.30 on S'aturday evening, having been detained by slight mechanical trouble necessitating repairs. His Excellency landed on Saturday morning and went to see Karika, who is an important chief, and a descendant of a famous warlike family. Karika presented His Excellency with beautiful mats and other gifts, and received presents from Lord Bledisloe. There was a large gathering of natives as Karika has a considerable vfollowing and influence. Their Excellencies subsequently took farewell of the Europeans at the z'wharf. Miss Tinirani's choir sang Rarotongan farewell songs as the launch left for the warship. The visit to the island was most ; successful. The cordiality manif ested could not have been exceeded. The Diomede will arrive at Auckland at 7 o'clock on Friday morning.
