Killing of Birds. Th'e New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society is still receiving reports of poaching and vandalism from many parts of New Zealand. The administration of the Conservation Acts,it was stated at the meeting of the society recently, fell far short of heing efficient. Reports were received of the wholesale shooting of godwits, stilts (.a protected species), and sea birds from motor cars on the Ninety Mile Beach,. despite the enactment prohibiting shooting from motor cars. On Stewaxt Island poaching was indulged in very freely, and the results of the poaching were disposed of openly, while in the more norther'n districts pigeons and kiwis were ill&gally killed in large numbers. "Much waste of wild life revenue, it was stated, "is unoduhtedly th'e resuit of our present weak methods in attempting conservation, and all with less than negligible results."
No Need for "Make Up-" Admiration of the iGermans as a race was expressed by Mr. W. R. Brugh, who has returned after a lengthy tour of Europe (states the Otago Daily Times). After referring to their friendly treatment of the visitor he stated that he had been struck hy the healthy and athletic appearance of hoth' men and women. While one saw hundreds of tbousands of women in England who made liberal use of cosmetics, one might journey for a long time without seeing a German woman who was "made up." The Germans practised all forms of physical culture with enthusiasm, and while he was in Dresden swimmers were so numerous that he could scarcely see the river flowing through the city.

Logan) at the meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council (says the Hawke's [ Bay Herald), when a request was made for a igrant towards th'e Hastings Dental Clinic. "The health of the people is & matter entrusted to other local bodies, and if we start to encroach on their duties we will not know where we stand," he added. The council, members agreed that the request was one that did not concern them, and no grant was made.
