DESERT STAR BlRINfGS OFF SURPRISE IN CUP INTAGLIO NOTCHES A WIN

Pukekohe, Saturday. Sunprises were the order of the day at th'e Franklin Racing Club's extra meeting to-day and Ruri was the only straightout fiav-ourite to score though Diversion, Rapp-er and L'Allegro who were favourites on the place xnachine ran into the money. • High Commissioner s Hurd'lee The Hiker, Prineipal • and Arch Eagle were the leaders over the early part of the Bombay Hurdles and Master Roley, Wee Prince and Free Air lay handy. Biform, making a forw-axd move, fell erossing the top. and when the straight was reached High Commissioner, who had put in a strong claim, led Prineipal, Master Roley, Free Air and Radiant Sun. High Commissioner won by six lengths easily from Free Air with the little-fancied Master Roley third and Prineipal fourth. Radiant Sun, Zane Grey (finishing on), Wee Prince and Unoco followed. Wilton fenced badly throughout and fell.

Confirming his Whangarei form Hushing won the Pukekawa Handicap fairly easily from the outsider Transaction, giving Stonex Bros a popular win. Tahae Mea wa.s the early leader from Hushing, Notamint, Kind Words, Tiny Star and the favourite, .Diversion, but after two furlongs had gone, Diversion began to move up and erossing the top had charge from Hushing, Miss Lulu, Tahae Mea., Notamint, Golden Spahi, Tiny Star and Kind .Words. Turning for home, Diversion looked a winner, but wilted on the run home, Hushing lasting longest to beat Transactfon, who finished fast from the ruck, with Diversion third, Miss Lulu, Kind Words, Musgo (finishing on) and Tiny Star.

Intaglio Scores Nicely Outsider but one in a field of seven, Intaglio the Taneatua, gelding, won the first division of the Harrisville Hack narrowly from Puss Moth with Thespis third. Landlubber was out first from Puss Moth, Intaglio, Royal Gallant and Wee Musk with Thespis tailing the field. There was no change at the top where Thespis commenceo to move up and at the home bend Landlubber and Puss Moth led Thespis, Royal Gallant, Wee Musk and Intaglio. The lastnamed came with a rattle to top off Puss Moth with Thespis third. 'Royal Gallant was fourtl followed by Wee Musk, Landlubbe" (who died away) and Catch 'em.

The last-named pushed up at the top turn, but, afc the straight entrance, Teels was in charge from Chief Cook, L'Alleigro, Granc Talk and Desert Star, outside thret horses. Cherry King Shows Improvement After running indifferently for some weeks, Cherry King showed considerable improvement to win the Te Kohanga Handicap for two-year-olds from the favourite, Rapper, with Ga.y Sheila third. Gay Sheila went to the front from the barrier with Cherry King, Rappsr, Gold Pocket and Queen Nona, May Money and Musquil being a bit back. Cherry King, supplanted Gay Sheila (on whom the weight was telling) at the straight with Gold Pocket, Rapper, Queen Nona and Musquil in that order. Courthaven, Blanford, Ruri, Wee Pat, Holly Lu and Gay Broney were the first half-dozen to pass the -stand and Golden Scaptre joined Courthaven and Holly Lu abreast in the lead followed by Gay Broney, Blanford, j Transaction, On Approval and Ruri. Sea Ruler Wins Last Race Having worked well on Friday, Sea Ruler was well backed in the last race, the Paerata Handicap, which he won from the little fancied Karangapai and Speedmint whose first race it was since Rotorua. Protomint and Speedmint were very slow to move and Sea Ruler led out and was uot headed. Sea Ruler was joined by Karangapai at the top and at the straight Sea Rulerled Karangapai, Imamint, Prolyxo and Limex. After the placed horses came Limex, Aiguille, Imamint, Prolyxo and Lady's Boy. Speedmint was unlucky.
