Not Now a Sanctuary A notice in " the Gazette xevokes the order declaring the Kohika vlagoon and adjoining lands ,to he a sanctuary. School Holidays fhe 750 schools controlled by the Auckland Education Board will close for two weeks next Friday, re-open-ing on Monday, May 22. The majo'rity of seeondary and technical schools will observe the sanae holiday period. Kaihau Development Scheme The Native Minister,' Sir Apirana Ngata, has gazetted a further 386 acres in the Waikato-Mariiopoto Land Conrt district under- 8uh-section 3, section 522. 'of the Native Land Act, '1931, to be known as tlie' Kaihau Development Scheme. The area is in The parish of Waipipi. Gold Bowls Challenges In a challenge ' m'atch for the miniature gold bowls for eompetitioh-'of members of the Rotorua" Bowling Club Managh and Brownie, 20 beat Jenkins and Queenin, 18 in a game played on Saturday. The next challenge for the trophy will be- between the winners and Carter and Lindsay. Old Days Recalled The old days of the "Penny Reading" will be recalled to many by the action of the St. John's Ladies' Guild who are organising a social to launeh a campaign to raise a mile of pennies. - It is not known exactly how many pennies go to the mile, but it is pro"bably quite a lot. In any case those who attend the social which takes place on Tuesday, May 2, at 8 o'cloclc wilb assist a good cause and add' to their knowledge.
Bowling Club Competitions •' The sixth round of the Rotorua \ -Bowling Club's handicap pairs competition was played on Saturday afternoon, the following being the re- •' sult of matches: — Griffiths and Stallard (5) 32 beat Roberts and Fletcher "(10). 22; Rowe and Collins (3), 32 beat Mcllroy and Duff (6), 17; Har- - vey and Wright (10), 28 beat Newmarch and Gardner (2), 19; Watson and Cooney (5), 35 beat Jackson and 1 Brown (7), 14, Grape Growing at Guthrie An excellent sample of grapes, grown in the open by Mrs. W. Gill, bf Guthrie, has been forwarded to this office. The fruit was of good size and fine flavour, and if it can be grown up to this standard, in sufficient quantities, it should open up a very profitable line of si^e cultivation on the Guthrie block. 1 Saies Tax • A manufacturing retailers' license under the saies tax, 1932-33 has been granted to McDowell and Co., Ltd. "(Rotorua), and wholesalers' licenses under the act to National Timber Co. (Ngongotaha), Rotoiti Timber Co. (Wellington, Rotorua. Ngongotaha, •Mourea), Vacuum -Oil Co. (Rotorua), . Wilson Timber Mills, Ltd (Te Whaiti, "Rotorua, Auckland). Croquet Ends ' In beautifully fine weather the '1932-33 season of the. Rotorua Croquet Club was concluded with the games played on Saturday afternodn. *The season had proved a most en:joyable and successful one for the club. High School Board Nominations for members of the "Rotorua High School Board of Governors close with the secretary, Mr. J. D. Davys, to-day. To-morrow evening a meeting- of parents will be held at the school when various matters concerning the school will be placed before them. ' Game Season Opens The game shooting season opens in the Rotorua district to-day and during the weelc-end a number of • sportsmen set out for the Taupo area and other good first of the season locations. Several maimais have been erected in the shallow water on Mission Bay at Te Ngae and on the majority of the lakes there will probably be some to speed the depart- ■ ing duck on his way.
i Rerewhakaitu Fishing Fishing at Rerewhakaitu yesterday a party of four rods took a total of 40 fish for the day. The average weight of the catch was in the vicinity of 31b, and with one or two exceptions, the fish were in good condi•tion. The level of this lake has fallen considerably this season and in many places the configuration of the ■ Shore has completely changed. This has had the effect, in some places, of making good fly fishing stretches and one or two good catches on the fly have been reported from this lake — previously regarded as almost solely trolling water.
