work of "the period VARIOUS COMMITTEES TELL OF THEIR DOINGS. BUSINESS OF COUNCIL. Reports on the work accomplished by the various committees of the Rotorua Borough Council were tabled at the council m-seting on Wednesday evening. The general committee recommended. — Kerbside Pumps. — (a) That the application from Messrs. Spedding and Sons for permission to erect additional kerb-side pump in front of their premises in Hinemoa Street be declined. This firm has already four pumps erected in front of their premises. (b) That where any premise3 are un-occupi-ed, a charge of £2 per annum be made to cover the outgoings by the council in connection with kerbside pumps and be subject to the condition that when the property is again occupied the full amount of the fees must be paid from the datet of occupation. Heavy Traffic Fees. — (a) That with reference to the request of the Whakatane Gounty Council for the refund of heavy traffic fees on certain vehicl-es, they be informed that as the owners of the trucks live in Rotorua and as the trucks themselves are kept at least half time in this district, the council is pr-spared in the case of those under di-spute, to pay to the Whakatane County Council 50 per cent. of the fees collected for the quarters the trucks were wholly engaged in work on the Whakatane area. (b) That one month's heavy traffic license fees he refunded to Messrs. Wilson'3 Timber Mills, Ltd., in respect of vehicle not in use, the indication disc and license having been dep-osited with the council as required by the regulations. Estimates. — That the following amounts he recommended to the new council to be placed on the estimates for the current year: — Ohinemutu, £275; Whakarewarewa, £175; Pound, £100; Town Planning, £50; Traffic Inspection Expenses, £10. Motor Cycle. — That 'as there is now no use for the motor cycle for the purposes of this committee, machine be fitted with the -sidecar and used for the purpose of other committees. Abattoir Fees. — That a. discount of 15 per cent. be allowed on the killing fees on all stock slaughtered at the abattoir on and after April 1, 1933, provided such' fees are paid on or before the 20th of the month following the killing. The general committee reported: — Dangerous Goods Licenses — H-av-ing received a request from a local firm for a remission of dangerous goods license fee, this firm having paid aj licen-se fee in March and the fee being again due in April. The committee has informed the applicant that there is no provi-sion in thel regulations for payment for portion of the year. Cemetery. — Having received a request for the installation of an additional water tap at the cemetery and having left same in the hands of the chairman with power to act. Transport Licensing Act. — That with reference to the alleged offence by one .of the carriers in town, the whole facts are being snbmitted to the Commissioner of Transport, who has advised that no further aetion -should be taken. Building Permits. — Having issued building permits to the value of £253 10s for the period. Works Committee. The committee reported: — Clearing of Drains. — Having received from the Commissioner of Unemployment advice that the board would subsidise the contract for the clearing of drains, work to be carried out by the unemployed workers, and having called tenders for the carrying out of work and left same in, the hands of the Mayor and .engineer to finalise, on the condition that not less than four men are engaged. Filling of Drain. — ^Having -advised Mr. Amson in resp'ect to his application to fiil a drain in Eurera Street in front of his property, that the matter will be left in abeyance until the permanent levels for storm water drainage are available. The engineer has been instructed to determine the necessary levels. Soil for Top-dressing. — Having granted three applications for soil for top-dressing of footpaths in front of properties. Construction of Streets. — ^Having instructed the engineer to carry out the necessary reconstruction or trimming work in Whakaue Street, Pukaki St., and the nortli end of Fenton Street. Main Highways. — ^Having made application to the Main Highways Board for suhsidie3 as under: — Cambridge highway, widening, 105; Arawa St., maintenance of bitumen, £98; Tutanekai St., maintenance of bitumen, £42; Whakatane highway, metalling 46 chains, 18ft wide by 4in deep and ordinary maintenance of all highways. The committee recommended: — Refuse Removal. — That the service for the removal of refuse be immediately extended to include the are'a between Pererika Street and Seddon Street West, and between King Street and Old Taupo Road. Grading of Highways.— That the Public Works Department be requested to carry on with tbe maintenance of main highways with their road planing machines on the same conditions -as last year. Caretaker, Whakarewarewa. — That Te Kira Hemopo he appointed to this position on trial for three months, duties to be as per schedule notdfied, wages £2 10s per week. Piping of Drain. — That Mr. F. A. Gainsford, in response to his enquiry, be advised that the responsibility of piping th'e drain in Phillip Street, to give access to the streets to be f orm- 1 ed through Sections 4 and 5, suburbs,

is wholly on the owner of the sections. Road Races. — That permission he granted the cycling braneh of the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club to held road races at intervals from May 6 to September 30, over the following streets, and suhject to the control of the borough inspector: Course. — Malfroy Road from Ranolf St. to James St., via Jame3 St., Seddon St. West, Old Taupo Road, D-evon St., Ashley St., High St., to Ranolf St., and to the commencing point. The races will be from three to eight times round the block. Alteration in Yard. — That the engineer be instructed to carry out a rearrangement of the buildings in the yard, with a view to more convenient grouping of the inside staff, and effecting economies in heating and telephone charges. Publicity Committee. The committee reported: — Advertising on Envelopes. — That a canvass is at present being made for orders, and when sufficient are ordered the work of making and printing will he put in h'and. Estimates. — That the -estimates for the current year have not yet been prepared. Wireless News.— Having received advice that a page describing thesights of this district will be inserted, free of cost, in tbe Wireless News, and having set up a sub-eommittee to prepare the matter. Th'e matter will be typed and duplicated by the council -staff and tbe pages bound in with the other news. Donation. — Having received an offer of a donation of £5 5 s towards next Carnival Week and having accepted same. with thanks. The committee recommended: — Advertising Campaign. — Th'at it he a xecommendation to th'e incoming council to plan its advertising well ahead, and that the handling of any campaign be entrusted to Messrs. J. Ilott Ltd. Town Square. — That the amount of £3 10s be refunded to Mr. N. Miller. Mr. Miller is the owner of the three bi-g machines on the Town Squ'are at Easter. Th'e arrangement for the use of the area was 15 per cent. of the gross takings of the three machines. The total revenue wa3 only 70 15s 6d. The amount referred to repr-esents the difference between 15 per cent. charged and 10 per cent., which your committee considers would be a fair r-en-tal under the circumstances. The total rental received, from the sideshows was £24, but it is not proposed to make any reduction in this amount, each sideshow paying 30s a week. Storage of Stage, ete. — That a leanto shelter to cost approximately £7 10s erected at the depot for the storage of thd staiges used on the Town Square.* ' 4
