LARGE ESTATE OF RIVIERA RECLUSE GOES TO CHARITY. London, Saturday. As the result of a decision of the High Court, !s|ixteen metropoMtan charitable institutions will share the £80,000 estate left by John Drinan, a recluse wh'o lived on the Riviera on £4 a week though he had an income of £13,000 -a year. Drinan's affairs came before the courts in 1931, when what purported to be a transfer hy him of £90,000 worth of shares to -an adventurer named Haiat was declared to be a forgery. Th'e swihdle had ■ been attem-pted with the aid of Charles Beale, a former British Consular official at- Ni'ce, who had figured as witnessdng the signatures of Haiat — ^killed in the meantime in |a.n accijdent — and of Drinan. . • Bank Liahility. -The1' Bank of Montreal has been h'eld liable to pay the --Public Trustee damages to eomperisate for the expenses incurred in investigating the forgery. - The bank is also liahle for the de-prec-iation of £36,000 worth of stock which Drinan left. \ , ..
