Championship Pairs Final. Providing the weather is suitable, j] the fiijal match in the Rotorua Bowling Club's championship pairs comp.etition, which was postponed on Saturday afternoon on account of rain will be played at the Government Grounds this morning. The members 0f the two teams meeting in the final are French and Budd and Kelly 1 and Knaggs. ^ Elderly Woman Collapses. The sudden collapse of an elderly 1 woman caused some excjtement in | ] Eruera Street yesterday morning but I ] with the assistance of residents in the 3 vicinity and a motor car from a nearby garage she was taken to her home. It is understood that the unfortunate lady was returning home from the : Ward Baths when she became faint : and collapsed. Better Cards. Under improved conditions, the 3 cards returned by Wednesday players 1 of the Motutara GoK Club yesterday ; 'afternoon were generally lower than those of last Saturday. Most members are now evincing a keen inter- • est in an effort to return sufficient j cards for handicapping purposes and help the club executive to ensure the early comm.encement of competition and ladder play. Pumicing Road's. General maintenance work is short--^ ly to be undertaken by the Public Works' Department on roads in the Rotorua Main Highway district. The first roads to be treated will be the Rotorua-Taupo and Te Ngae-Paen-garoa main highways which will be pumiced and graded. This work will probably be commenced next week. Foothpath Paving. The concrete paving being laid down by the Rotorua Borough Council on the footpath on the north side of Pukuatua Street is now approach- ' 'ing Tutanekai Street and nearing' completion. The work provides a Tong felt want, but whether other footpaths in the 'town area will be suitably treated will depend upon the policy of the new council. Hospital Board' Levy When the subject of the increase in the Waikato Hospital Board levy 'by £39 6s 9d was diseussed by the Rotorua Borough Council last evening 'Cr. G. Urquhart, the council's representative on the board, said that every economy was being practised by the board and the council had nothing to eomplain of, the increase being due to higher valuations. Lucky Escape The driver of a sedan car had a fortunate escape from, serious injury on the Taupo-Rotorua main road on Tuesday evening when his car sotmersaulted down a steep hank to level ground forty feet below. The accident oecurred a short distance on the Waiotapu side of the turn-off to Galatea, but the car fortunately landed on its wheels at the bottom of the deep ravine, the only damage being hroken windows und crushed mudiguards. Yesterday morning it was hoisted haclc to the road by Fortune and Carruthers service waggon 'and proceeded under its own power to Rotorua. Apart from a severe shaking the driver was uninjured. Unusual Sight There is rather a curious sight to he seen in the Government Gar.dens at the present time, One of th.e large trees just north of the Blue Baths has one side (the north) yellow and on the other the leaves still retain their green tints. It is suggested that the leaves are retaining their eolOUring owing to the warmth from the baths, since the prevailing wind from that direction is cold. Rugby Football The following players will represent the Qld Boys R.F.C. on Saturday, April 29 : — A team: J. Gainsford, McRae, Vercoe, R. Lewis, Matthews, Roberts'on, Clark, Grey, Pipson, Berg.han, Anaru, L. Randerson, Musgrave, Christophers, Kingi. B team: Ewert, Dowling, Beckett, E. Lewis, B. Randerson, Kelly, H. Lewis, Neeson, N. Gainsford, Mulligan, Allen, Shields, Edge, Donaldson, French, Pethy'bridge, Godsalve. Benefit for Butchers The general committee of the Rotorua Borough Council has recommended that a discount of 15 per cent. be allowed on fees for stock slaughtered at the abattoir. It was reported that the abattoir was now making a profit. It was mentioned that this should result in lowering the price of meat in the town. Cr. Coleman advocated a 10 per cent. reduction with a 5 per cent. discount for cash which was supported by Cr. Johnson. The mayor advocated the recommendation which was adopted. Condition of Roads At last night's meeting Cr. O. H. Goleman drew the attention of the Rotorua Borough Council to the bad state of the edges of the bitumen in Tutanekai Street and also the state of the Cambridge highway. The mayor said that the latter road was due for widening and would receive attention as soon as the Main Highways Board found the subsidy it promised and had not found last year. All the available money had been expended and the Main Highways Board would again be approached. ' Cr. Johnson stated that a light coat of bitumen would be applied on the road edges in Tutanekai Street.
