PASSING THE CLUTCH

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. ^ A new automatic transmission has i been invented by an American engineer. A ear equipped wlith this device will ha.ve no clutch to push out or gear to shift, according to the inventor. The gears are mounted on overrunning clutches which are put in action and held in and out of action by centrifugal 'governors. The governors are operated by the speed of the engine, and in ddling there is no movement of the oar. When the accelerator pedal is depressed the j car moves because the governor has j put low gear into action. As the car increases in spe'ed, the governors automatically put the car in second and finally third speed. If the engine stops for any reason at all the clutches are thrown open and the transmission is in neutral. On hills as soon as the engine labours it automatically gctos to second speed. On level roads it may be, so adjusted that it sta.ys in high as. low as five miles an hour, when it automatically changes to a lower gear.
