MAJESTIC THEATRE
TG-NIGHT. Presenting a picture of Galifornia in the -days of the gold rush lalong with an unusual romance of that colourful perliod "Salomy Jane" opens at the Majestic Theatre to-night, with such luminariss as Charles Farrell, Joan Bennett and Ralph Bellamy in the leading roles-. Raoul Waish is said to have iset a new standard in bringing a bygone era to the speaking scr'een' with this adaptation of Bret Harte's famous story, "Salomy Jane's Kiss." The story deals with the coming to a remote mining camp of a myisterious stranger in Confederate uniform, with a secret purpose of his own. His arrival awakens the interest of the camp's belle, Salomy J.ane, a highspirited and rath'er madcap daughter of the South, who heretofore has had no patience with the pleas of her variouis suitors. When the stranger kills the' camp's leading politician, the Vigilantes start after him, and despite the girl's efforts, he is captured and sentenced to hang. At the last rainute the istranger escapes, with the posse and especially one rejected suitor hot on his trail, and matters reach a gripping crisis when Salomy tries to aid him in getting away. How'she effects this, with the help of the camp's leading gambler, forms the denouement of the story. The photography and the settings are likewise said to.be unus.ual. With the exception of a few hrief sequences made at the studio, nearly all of the pictul;e was filmed amid the stately grandeur of the "giant forest" in Sequoia Sierras — within a few miles. of the exaet locale of Harte's story. These vast trees'and the vistas of the snow-capped peaks beyond them constitute a background rarely found on the screen.
