Auckland, Sunday.Three prisoiiers escaped from the Waikunb sub-prison camp, 16 miles north of Turangi, on Friday morning. The escapees are : Eugene Charles Dominic McCarthy aged 25 years, | serving a sentence of three years; Basil Hodgson, aged 26 years, serving ; a sentence of two years and Vinceiit Barney Reardon, aged 30 years, serving sentence of two years. The thi-ee men reported siek,. and with a -warder in charge, were the only oceupants of the camp on Friday mbrnirig The 'escape had apparently been carefully planned. | Hodgson and Reardon, occupying }' the same dormitory, smashed open a I locked door with a camp stool, and |! were joined in the open by McCarthy, - | who escaped from his cell by climb- ' ing through the window. Three men armed themselves with sticks and unsuccessfully attempted to stop them. The men then headed down the disused National Park-Taupo Road. An extensive search was organised, and it was reported late this afternoon that one prisoner, whose name is not availahle, had been recaptured at Hihitahi, between Waiouru and Taihape.
