marooned in wastes MISS BATTEN STRIKES SAND STORM IN , DESERT A PLUCKY ATTEMPT

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Karachi, April 16. After being marooned in the wastes of Baluchistan, and succoured by tribesmen, who ecorted her to Las Bela, Miss Jean Batten, arrived at Karachi in a motor lorry provided by British officials, taking nearly 12 hours over rough tracks. She encountered one of the worst sand storms in the Persian Gulf, and steeplechased over hills and crevasses in wild country. She spotted a flat £iece of country and landed only to find it marshy ground, where the aeroplane tilted, thd propeller being broken. The girl's pluck was shown tyy the fact that shortly after she arrived at Karachi, she wanted to return in the motor lorry to the stranded "machine with a new propeller, but a member of the aero club offered to take her. Her time of 4i days to India is the best yet for a" woman between England and Australia. Miss Batten was unable to locate her machine and finally went back in the car to Las Bela. The position is, therefore, that she cannot hope to beat the international record for the flight, but intends to carry on as soon a& her machine is discovered. ' c
