C.J.C. MEETING CLASSY COiMPANY SET DOWN TO CONTEST GREAT EASTER CHANCES OF CONTEST ANTS (Notes by "Canard") The Canterbury Jockey Club has as usual drawn excellent acceptances for it? Easter programmc and particularly 'in the Great Easter almost the whole of the cream of the southerners is engaged though there are one or stwo notable absfentetes frueh £.s Silver Scorn who is going for the bigger money given by Auckland. • Though it is almost a week ahead (the first day is held on Easter Monday) yet an early review of the fields may be of some present benefit for those who like to communicate their ] fancies to fpiends in other and southern centres. An abbreviated fina.1 review will be given in Easter Monday morning's issue. The opening event is the Kildare Highweight and only 23 pounds separate the top-weights from the minimum the field being well brought together. Juniper and Rocket head the list with 10.9 apiece and both are from good stables. Juniper would perhaps be more, at home over a furlong more than the bare mile but Rocket should do better than she did at Trentham over the shorter distance of ground. Royal Love has shown distinct signs of improvement since th'e autumn meetings came on and may be equal to carrying his 10.6 successfully. Monastic is a sound hurdler and is probably getting ready for the winter battens; Elude has good fppm of recent weeks and ran prominently last time out at Riccarton. Taku Tama, the Westcoaster, formerly one of Dick Hannon's team, may not carry the weight. Rothen is coming right as h'er two placings at Waimate show a.nd Tea Garden is a handy sort. Old Aladdin is making a reappearance and the good hurdler is sure to make his presence felt this winter if he can be kept on his pins. Both Pixie Gold and Wealth are moderates and when the summing up is done it may be found that favourites include. Juniper Rocket Elude
Irom. — KILDARE HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, 1 mile. Juniper, Rocket 10.9, Royal Love, 10.6. Monastic 9.13, Elude 9.13, Taku Tama 9.11, Strong Light 9.10, Rotlu'ii, Tea Garden 9.5, Alladin 9.3, Grand Acre, Pixie Gold, Wealth 9.0. ***.* The Champagne Stakes for dwo-year-olds has drawn a handy field of seven including some really good ones. Fracas who won so convincingly the s'r-ond day at Wellington has 8.8 to carry and she will be hard. iRed Manfred is still regarded as a real good one by competent judges and the Riccarton going should suit him. Pegged Exchange has shown that she is not ! ii be entirely disregarded and Th" Ma.-querader is doing some outstanding gallops at headquarters of late. Guarantee is very solid and he should run out six furlongs in this company with the best. June the Third has no. fulfilled her early promise but she won and may be equal to repeating the dose of beating Guarantee, bu' it is questionable if she can do i"; over six. Nightly has not got much regular form to go upon but the Nightraid breeding is in his favour The race should be a good one and as June the Third and The Masquerader are both in the Russley Plate they will probably start in that in preference to taking in such cracks as . Fracas Guarantee Red Manfred from. — CHAMPAGNE STAKES For two-year-olds; 6 furs. Fracas, Red Manfred, Masquerader,
Guarantee, June Third, Knightly, Pegged Exchange. * * * There iq a good team in the Autumn Mile and the main is 14, several of whom are recent winners.. Argentic may make it three on end for his lady own'er, but has to reckon with Zeebrugge who also is very consistent. Niggerhead is a handy sort and well enough bred for anything but Chief Light from the Hazlett'stable has not done so well as his connections hoped. When right he is brilliant but the mile may be too fax for him. Polydora' is an ih-and-out sort and Water Polo is staging a return to previous form but is hard to keep sound. Kemal Pasha is pretty good but p-retty inconsistent and though once hailed as a wonder horse has lost a lot of friends. i Grand Review is a very unlucky sort and must have cost Jack Prosser a roll. Eupator has had a recent bracket and Importance has well repaid the 70 guineas she brought at G. D. Greenwood's sale. Her form at Wai-, mate was most encouraging. Tray- ' lavah appeals most of the seven stone division. A hard race to sum up and one which may trip baclters of form. The present fancies appear to be i Importance Argentic Zeebrugge from. — AUTUMN PLATE, 1 mile. Argentic 9.1, Zeebrugge 8.9, Niggerhead 8.6, Chief Light 8.5, Fleeting Glance 8.4, Polydora 7.9, Water Polo, 7.9, Kemal Pasha 7.9, Grand Review 7.7, Eupator 7.5, Importance 7.3, Traylavah, Robin Hood, Bell Hill, 7.0. * * * No less than 16 babies are carded for' the Russley Plate and it usually takes a brilliant youngster to caxry off the five furlongs scurry. Trivet has proved herself a useful sort of filly and her form reads well for this course. June the Third h'as already been mentioned whilst Silent Flight is a very promising isort who did not travel too well on the way to Trentham. Sweet Agnes is a consistent filly with good average credentials over five. High Brow is a moderate and The Masquerader should be more at home in this company than in the classic. Of the rest little is known and their form must be taken largely upon trust. The form points to. — Sweet Agnes Trivet June the Third
from. — RUSSLEY PLATE HANDICAP For two-year-olds; 5 furs. Trivet 8.12, June Third 8.1, Silent Flight 8.1, Sweet Agnes 7.10, The Masquerader High Brow, Glandovey, Sir Leighton, Acceptable, Gaysome, 7.5, Motunau, Sundancer, Tuirau, Final Shot, Sweet Arrow, Bright Shade, 7.3. jfc jfc Then comes the race of the day the Great Easter with a field of 16 headjd by the Clifford horse Cricket Bat. Though he is a lot in the boom by
many writers "Canard noticed him .n a race on two occasions at Ellerslie trying to savage a horse alongside h.m and that is an infallible sign of a horse turning sour. It ma.y be „hat Cricket Bat will give of his oest but it is much more likely that he will not. That risk has to taken .jut "Canard" always is doubtful of a stallion which has taken to savaging in a race. Gay Crest, if he was che Gay Crest one previously knew would be home and hosed, but this year he seems to have lost form probably due to the gruelling races he had under welterweights last seasn. He may do better after spelling. Great Star from the Prosser stable is at home over all journeys up to two miles and he must be given a royal jhance. iRuling Light from the Haziett team is a good one when in the mood but is inclined to have his days off. The imported Irish Lancer is a real hoi*se and not too much notice need be taken of his defeats. He will be a source of danger to the very best. Merry Peel has apparently gone off and Paddy Webb may need something else to line the pockets for the winter. Assemble defeated good class fields at Trentham and should run out a merry mile. Spoon, after losing all form eaxlier in the year, seems to be gaining ground and this might suit her. Martian Chief and True Shaft, the latter being in the Sockburn are a good useful pair but Gustavo the full brother to Count Cavour is very hard to lceep right and it may be his day to have sore pins. Princess Argosy, after her Wellington form reads the best of the lightly weighted division the other to appeal in the limit lot being (Rebel Song. As usual it is a hard race to sort out and possibilities at present include Great Star, Ruling Light, Irish Lancer, Assemble, Spoon, Princess Argosy and Rebel Song the most popular being. Great Star Princess Argosy Irish Lancer from. — GREAT EASTER HANDICAP, 7 fur. Cricket Bat, Gay Crest, Great Star, Ruling Light,. Irish Lancer, Merry Peel, Assemble, Spoon, Martian Chief, True Shaft, Gustavo, Princess Argosy, Ranelagh, Palermo, Mount Boa, Rebel Song. * * Anything might happen in the Papanui Haek Six and with a field of I 22 the punter who tries to sort out
the placed horses is simply looking for trouble. Crash has some form, so has Cottesmore, whilst Heather Glow, Cranford, Imperial Spear and Jeremy may be mentioned. The popular ones to carry support may be Cottesmore Heather Glow Crash from. — PAPANUI HANDICAP, 6 furs. Crash 9.1, Red Royal 8.13, Cottesmore 8.9, Silver Streak, 8.6, Knocklong 7.11,. Some Shamble 7.9, Heather Glow 7.8, Manetho 7.8, Golden Dart, Cleaner, Cranford, Errantry, Miss Nightraid, Imperial Spear, Sir Drake, Moneygran, Goldstead, Scarlet Robe, Jeremy, Indicate, St. Joan, Silk Arrow, 7.7. * * * *
The Sockburn Handicap is run over nine furlongs and usually an improver over seven or a mile takes out in this race. Shatter who has good ten furlongs form heads the list but nine stone may be a bit too much for him and the distance aj bit short. It is a iong time since the Auckland Cup winner Concentrate carried 8.12 but he also may find the journey too short though' he has been reeling off some u ce miles on the track. Red Hecklt on the other hand should find this just the thing the doctor ordered with only 8.6. Eminent is one to seriously challenge anything in the field and his success on the Wanganui-Taranaki circuit should be remembered. Jaloux is more of a twelve furlong horse but he has usually been well forward in the running for the first mile. Tout le Mond will have' friends and so will Ramo while True Shaft and Argentic are elsewhere engaged. It should be a most interesting race with preference for Red Heckle Eminent Tout le Mond from. — SOCKBURN HANDICAP, 9 furs. Shatter 9.0, Concentrate 8.12, Red Heckle, 8.6, Eminent 8.5, Jaloux, 7.12; Tout le Mond 7.13, True Shaft 7.9, ■■Ramo 7.8, Argentic 7.1. The first day ends with the Courtney seven with a compact field of eight of whom Mount Boa., Monastic and Zeebrugge are previously carded. Hurlingham should go well with 8.11 if the track suits and Might is most steady. Rational II. is good but not sound. The next three on the list, if there, should deserve some consideration, Mount Boa and Zeebrugge both being fancied. Metal Bird is a handy sort and has won minor cup events and Wise Choice is in about the same category. If at the post there may be money for Might Mount Boa Hurlingham from. — COU-RTNEY HANDICAP, 7 furs. Hurlingham 8.11, Might 8.5, Rational II., 8.4, Mount Boa 7.13, Monastic 7.8, Zeebrugge 7.8, Metal Bird 7.8, Wise Choice 7.7. * * V The fields for the second day will be dealt with in the1 issue of Easter Tuesday, by "Canard."
