GAS POISONING MANAGER AND FOUR MEN LOSE LIVES IN SUAFT TRAGEDY ON THE RAND

Rec. April 9, 5.5 p.m. Capetown, April 8. Several lives were lost, including a number of officials in a fire 4000 feet below the surface in the Langlaagee State mine. The. victims were gasse-d. The fire has not been located. Rescuers from all Rand mines are volunteering. Later feports state that no shift was on duty when the- fire broke out. The underground manager, accompanied by officials, only three of whom were equipped with gas masks, descended to investigate. The manager led the seeond- party of investigators. When they became gassed, the rescuers worked desperately. A native heroically rescued two Europeans who had collapsed. 1 The underground manager and four others are dead and the manager and the rest of the party are in hospital, but are improving.
