SURROUNDED BY LIGHTNING (Rec. April 5.) New York, April 4. A message received here said the body of Lieutenant Commander Harold MacLellan, has heen picked np by the coastguard. A. message signed, Wiley, given out by the coastguard, said in part: — "We are surrounded by lightning at the light" (presumably Barnegat light) .. The night atmosphere was not very turbulent. "We ran an east' course until about 11 p.m. and then crossed to the west. At midnight we sighted a light on the ground and. changed the course ,to 130 degrees. "The ship began to descend rapidly from her flying altitude and we dropped ballast. "We became entirely surrounded by lightning, and at about 12.30 a.m. the ship began to descend rapidly from her flying altitude, of 1600 feet. "We dropped ballast forward, and regained our altitude. Three minutes later we seemed to be in the centre of the storm. The ship began to shift about violently and we called all hands. "The ship commenced to descend with her stern inclined downward. "We dropped more ballast but the rudder control was carried away and the descent continued to the water. , "The ship was demolished by the impact. "In a lightning flash I saw many men swimming. "The wreckage drifted rapidly away. "The discipline in the control car was perfect."
