Basketball Association ; The annual meeting of the Rotorua Basketball Association is to be held in the Hotel Rotorua to-morrow (Friday) night, when the report and I balance sheet will be corisidefed and the date of the new season discussed. Urquhart) reported to the Rotorua Borough Gouncil last evening that 73 per ceht. of the rates had heen collected up to March 31, a sum of £9,203 out of £12,463. Whale Close in Shore A whale estimated fo. he about 60 to 80 feet long was sighted close to the Hawai Beach recently, states our Opotiki' corresp'ondept. The whale •swam up and down the beacK' severtal times so close that it was actually in tha breakers at times. Its fin could be seen above water most of the time and every now and then it ishot a fountain of water into the air as it blew.

Anzac Day Poppies The Rotorua IR.S.A. has been grarited permission to isell poppies the borough streets on April 22. The. Women's Club has undertaken to do the selling. High School Re-Union. School (O'ld Pupil's Association will be inaugurate'dh-on Wednesday next when a re-union dinner, to he followed hy a dance will be held at Brents Bathgate House. Statutory Half Holiday The) petition for the poll upon the statutory half day presented to ^the Rotorua Borough Gouncil cohtained 374 names of whom about 270 are of electors. The requisite number is ■ 273, but as some doubts exist as to the qualifications of some of the signatories the matter has heen deferred to the Legal and Finance Committee'. Would Take the Lot Over When a letter was received from the Minister of Tourist and Health Rej sorts intimating that the department did not think that the Rotorua Borough Council would wish to take over the various Government aetivities in the town, it was decided to forward a reply that the council seeing that the Government appeared to be embaxrassed hy the ibaths, grounds, electricity, etc., was quite prepared to negotiate to take the whole

lot over and run them isatisfactoriiy. Cr. Coleman registered dissent, considering the time inopportune as did Cr. Galbraith. Crs. Urquhart and Johnston thought that the council should he prepared to take the whole lot over. The Mayor considered that sooner or later the council would have to take them over though whether the time were opportune was another matter. At any rate, it would be as, well to keep the whole matter open. The Mayor's view was the final one adopted.

Gaieties of 1932 . In the course of their Dominion tour Paul Warton and Stanley McKay's Gaieties of 1932 Company will hold a short season of two days in Rotorua on April 21 and 22. The company, which provides a revival of the revue shows so popular some years ago include two well-known artists in Amy Rochelle, a soprano of note and Joe Lawman, who is considered Australia's funniest comedian. Included in a varied programme will be dancing, delightful melodies, acro- | batic feats and magnificent dressing. Bowling CompetitionS. French, Pakes 26 beat Kurney, Brown 17; Nesbitt, Banks 29 beat Stallard, Webber 11; Harris, Tapp beat Brackebush, Aitken by default.

Basketball Dance. The Ngongotaha Basketball club will hold its first functioh oi the 1933 season tomorrow evening in the Ngongotaha Hall when a dance will take p'lace. Music for the dances will be provided by Epi Shalfoon's Melody Boys orchestra and a light supper will also be provided. Departure Delayed. j Owing to the illneiss of one member of the team, Mr. C. Phillips, the Australian swimmers did not leave Rotorua yesterday morning as had heen arranged. The team will leave this morning in order to cpmpete at an Auckland carnival to-night prior to leaving for Australia on Friday.
