BUYS A TOWN
TO BE DESTROYED FOR PROFIT An Englishman, Mr. Robert Bell, has bought a town of 5000 inhabitants, which he proposes to destroy after having paid 1,000,000 pesos (£25,000 at par) for the privilege. The town, Caleta Chloso, about 10 miles south of Antofagasta, in Ghile, is a nitrate port. Mr. Bell will become the sole arbiter of the destinies of its Hundreds of homes, two schools postal.and telegraph olfices, its ancient chnrch, police station, railway stations, piers, wharves, two .hotels, and numerous shops. The. town used to helong to the Agua Santa Nitrate Company, of London; but when the fiscal concession expired, no one had enough interest in nitrate to renew it. Mr. Bell, who hopes to win another million pesbs out of it had formerly retired from work, aiid is mOfe than 70, hut is active and[ vigorous. In Caleta Soloso railway lines are being torn up, stations pulled down, and water pipes dug up. All will be taken to Central Chile, where there is a serious shortage of imported goods.
