HARDY BISHOP

ENTHUSIASTIC SPOiRTSMAN AT 75 YEARS OF AGE. RECENT YISITOR TO N.Z. The Bishop of London, Dr. A. F. Winnington Ingram, who visited New Zealand six years laigo, was 75 years of age on January 26, and there are few men of his age who can say— as the Bishop can— "My recreations are still squash rackets, golf, tennis ■and hockey." Dr. Ingram, in fact, seems to have the physical fitness and the zest of a man 50 years his junior. With the enthusiasm of a schoolboy, the Bishop took an Evening News reporter into his study at Fulham Pialace ori his birthday and showed him the magnificent array of birthday presents and messages of congratulation that had come from all over the world. "Here is a birthday cake with a mitre on it worked in sugar," he said, undoing a cardboard hox; "and look at this!" Someone, knowing his fondness for golf had sent him some beautiful miniature golf clubs made of silver and enclosed in a silver "golf bag." "Twlenty-two old friends are coming to dinner to-night," said the Bishop. 'That is my only birthday party. I am feelinig extraordinarily well. I have not been attended by a doctor for ten years. It is a busy birthday, for I have three committees to attend, and I shall get back only just in time for my little dinner. "There is no golf for me to-day. Friday is my golf day, but to-morrow I am going to p'lay squash rackets instead. It is too cold for golf. Much too much is miade ia,bout my capacity as the sporting bishop. The really important thing is that I deal with a hundred letters a day, preach fire times a wetek and then have to interview my clergy and lattend to other duties. The great thing is to keep keen about your own work and enjoy it. That is the real test of work — enjoying it. My games help me1 with my work."
