(From Our Own Correspondent).
GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH AT TUESDAY'S MEETING. COWS ON ROADS.
Very little business was transaeted in a long sitting of the Opotiki Borough. Council on Tuesday night, when the following councillors were present. — J. T. Thompson (Mayor), T. Hitchens, H. M. Budd, S. Shalfoon, F. J. Short, J. Maine, J. F. Tabb: An application from the Opotiki Fire Brigade for permission to use the football ground for an athletic meeting on Ap'ril 10 and to be allowed to charge for admission was granted. The couneil accepted an invitation to attend the presentation of St-. John ambulanee certificates on Wednesday, April 5. A letter of appreciation was r'eceived from the Mechanics' Institute thanking the eouncil for remitting half its rates. After some discussion over a request from Mr. D. M. Parkinson , f or a reduction in the rental of his section, it wa's decided to advise Mr. Parkinson that while the council could not reduce the rental, it had no objection to the lease being terminated and again advertised for public tender. The borough foreman reported baving made an inspection of the water ma'ins leading to Mr. Gordon's property, as instructed, and recommended that the council should refund the sum of £2 10s. It was decided to adopt the foreman'is recommendation, subject to Mr. Gordon's approval. Discussing a request from the fire brigade for financial assistance towards sending a team to compete in the fire brigade comp'etitions at Te Aroha, Cr. Hitchens quoted the case of two other borough councils which had donated as much as £10 and £15 respectively for a simijar purpose. Cr. Short suggested that if at all possible he considered that the council should assist the team. He pointed out that the brigade was a purely voluntary one which served the town well. The council decided to donate three guineas towards the team's expenses. Discussing the isisue of licenses for cows running on the roads, Cr. Budd supported by Cr. G. A. Hitchens, moved that the fees be the same as last year. An amendment, proposed by Cr. Shalfoon and seconded by Cr. Tabb provided for the fees being reduced to £2 for the first cow .and £3 for the second. The amendment was lost by three votes to four, and the motion was carried.
