SATURDAY'S MATCHES

ALBION IN STRONG POSITION AGAINST OLD BOYS CITY RETAIN WILLIAMS' CUP Owing to the intervention of the Rotorua High School barracks only one competition game in the McLean Cup series was played on Saturday. This was between Albion and Old Boys, the former team at stumps being 16 run ahead of its opponents, with five wickets in hand. City and Ngongotaha both of which won in the McLean Cup series by default from the High School team were engaged in a challenge match for the Williams' Cup, City retaining the trophy by an easy victory on the first innings. BEST PERFORM AN CES Batting Sutherland (Albion) 70 Harding (City) 69 Godsalve (City) 66 Reed (City) 64 Beale (Olds Boys) -. 49 Bowling Reed (City) ... 4 for 12 Lenihan (Albion) ... 4 for 32 Crawf or d-W atson (Albion) 3 for 18 Albion Ahead Old Boys lost the first wicket for only one run in its first innings, Heley being bowled by Lenihan in the first over, without scoring. The newcomer, Beale, commenced confidently, but lost Ewert with the total at eight. Beale and Spedding carried the total to 31 runs, the latter, however, being content to bat carefully.

Beale was still playing each bowler confidently and received good support from Pipson who, however, was caught by Martin off Burton. Matthews carried on with Beale who eventually played forward to Crawf ordWatson and was neatly stumped by Gresham. He had scored 49 runs in attractive style. Matthews continued to hit freely, but received little support from the tail and was not out with 21 to his credit when the innings closed for 115 runs. With f our wickets down for 30 runs Albion were in a desperate position, but a determined stand by Burton and a rare exhibition of hitting by Sutherland, took the total to 106 for the loss of five wickets. Sutherland scored 70 runs in 30 minutes, his total including four sixers and six boundary hits.- At stumps Watson was not out with 13 runs to his credit and with the score at 131 runs. Details : —
