ATTEMPT ON PASS

FIERCE MACHINE GUN FIRE. (Received Februray 28.) Peking, Feb. 27. Desperate fighting is still in progress for the possession of Paishihtsumen Pass on the south-east border of Jehol, which is the first barrier to Lingyuan, the main gateway to the provincial capital at Chengtehfu. Japanese cavalry tried to rus'n the pass but were eompelled to retire in the face of withering machine gun fire, leaving several hundred dead in the snow. To the north-east the Japanese attacking force is meeting with great difficulty in the Kailu region which is on the eastern edge of the Gohi desert. The Japanese are finding* it impossible to use tanks or motor transport. Chinese despatches claim that the guerillas again eheeked the Japanese advance across the desert towards Chihfeng.
