LIFE SAVING CLUB

EFFORT TO ATTRACT TOURISTS TO BAY OF PLENTY DISTRICTS COUNCIL ASSISTANCE Opotiki, Wednesday. A deputation comprising Messrs W. Burrett, H. Simpson, E. Seville, G. Ormandy, Rev. Salt, H. Carter-Bowles and E. Boyce waited on the Opotiki Borough Council on Tuesday night to ask for assistance toward the funds of the newly formed Opotiki Life Saving Club. After the deputation had been introduced by Cr, Short, Mr. Ormandy, as ispokesman for the deputation, briefly outlined the aims and objects of the club as already published in the "Morniiag Post." He considered that the club could do a great deal to popularise the Opotiki beaches and was entltled to support from the council for this reason. They proposed to coneentrate upon the Waiotahi beach as fche most popular at the present time. The club would undertake to flag the beach and provide patrols. Mr. Seville said he need hardly stress the educational value of such a club in a town like Opotiki. They had 20 members at present and it was hoped that by the end of the year, these would also become instructors and form smaller groups. Mr. Simpson stated that Opotiki had a wonderful asset in its beaches and one vffiich the club, working in eonjunction with the council, could do a great deal to popularise. A great number of tourists visited Rotorua every year and he considered that it should be poissible to -attract very many of these to Opotiki. The first essential so far as the club was concerned, was a reel and it was hoped that the council would asgist by a contribution toWards the estimated cost of £12 10s. Members of the deputation then withdrew and after a brief discussion it was decided by councillois to make a donation of £3 3s toward the club funds. On Cr. Short's suggestion, it was also decided to assist further by ereeting a shed to house the reel. Cr. Short pointed out that a certain amount of used materiial suitable for the purpose was lying in the borough yard and it was decided to proceed at once if the material is available.
