cMisere.")

epsom trots GOOD FIELD CONTESTS HENDERSON TWO MILER. THE CARD REVIEWED.

(Notes by *

In li'ne with' all other progressive clubs, the Auckland Trotting Club iS staging the wiii and place tote at its meeting to-day and this will he the first occasion upon which a trotting club has done sq in New Zealand, so the result will be awaited with interest. Up to the present there_ is not a case of a placed horse failing to return a, dividend of less than the aniount staked. # ■•!= *

Proceedings open with the Trial Handicap for the square-gaiters over a li miles journey at a 3.49 g'ait, and of the 12 carded six are on the_ end peg. Autumn Lu is showing a bit of form for Geo. Stubbs and should handle the easier going well. Grand Triumph is a sort which is likely to give cheek if he settles down, but both he and La Triumph are a bit on their toes. Kohewah is on 36 and Nelson Pirate, who showed a sign or two of coming hack to form share the 48 marlc with Wiriwhata, who should hold him safe. Mattie Herbilwyn is too "iffy" to be followed with any eertainty, hut ishe has the pace if she keeps down and one of these days she will and the diwie will be a thumper. Win Huon is the most -consistent of the field/ hut 96 yards is a lot to give away, but he cannot be left out of the list. Nicoya is a long way back but can foot it with the best. The possibilities are: — Wiriwhata Win i Huon Autumn Lu from —

TRIAL HANDICAP (Harness). Of £110; class 3.48. 11 miles. Autumn Lu, Gala Day, Grand Triumph, La Triumph, Otara, Stardown, scr; Kohewah, 36yds bhd; Nelson Pirate, Wiriwhata, Mattie Herbilwyn, 72, Win Huon, 96; Nicora, 108. * # * In the Waiheke there is a field of 17, of whom no less than 11 are on the * limit, and this means ttvo lines. This makes it a.bit harder for the back-

markers, as the journey as only over li miles with a 3.4 class. That does not give them mueh time to get through the moh, especially as there are some breakers among them. Homebrew should be p-opular these hard times, whilst most people want Lucky Love. May Chenault, Jester and Pedlar read the best of the limit lot, and Nellota, Raider and Fisher best of the others. It is a race which promises surprises, but the form reads: —

Nellota Pedlar Homebrew from — WAIHEKE HANDICAP (Harness). Of £110; Class 2.4; U miles. Free Gift, Ilome Brew, Jester, Lucky Love, Min Bells, May Chenault, Our Summer, Pedlar, Regina Derby, Student Prince, Te Mahanga, scr; Edna Worthy, Nellota, Raider, 12yds bhd; Gold Seaaai, Historian 24, Fisher, j6. # ❖ The principal race of the day, the Otahuhu Handicap of 2 miles, with a 4.32 limit, has drawn a l^andy class field. Of these six are on the peg, including First Flight, who, if she

gens away, win taice a deal of catching. Kewpie's Guy may have settled down and Kewpie's Triumph seems to have got over his recent trouble, Pageant has shaped remarkably well since moving to Auckland. Raydus, from Lou Berkett's Nelson stable, will be close if he has. retained his form, but there is bound to be a lot of support for the southern mare, Silver de Oro. She is very well and' the only thing that may go against her is the grass track. Wilma Dillon is in much the saiaie set of circumstances. Off 48, Peter Pirate must be hard, but Auto Machine, who has. been trained on the dirt track at Addington of late, may not relish the return to grass. He won the race last year. There is the making of a first-class race, with preferences as yet for: — Silver de Oro Peter Pirate First Flight from OTAHUHU HANDICAP (Harness). Of £300; Class 4.32. 2 miles. First Flight, Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie's Triumph, Pageant, Raydus, Silver de Oro, scr, Wilma Dillon, 12yds bhd; Peter Pirate 48, Auto Machine, 60 * * sjt The Uevil's Dozen is set down to contest the Papakura, and there are several from outside stables carded. Native Berry, Realty and Willie Derby appeal most of the limit crowd, whilst Free Logan is in the position of having seconds up his sleeve. Lady Coronado has apparently returned to form and she, with Lady Yvonne and Modern Light, appeal most of those upon 12 yards. Glandore seems to be coming more solid and Oliver Thorpe is so honest that he must , always he dangerous. Kelp disappointed at Hutt Park but may do better here. It is a race with all the indicdtions for an upset but the tickets may be taken upon. —

Free Logan Native Berry Modern Light from — PAPAKURA HANDICAP (Harness). Of £120. Class 3.36. li miles. Nelson's Chum, Native Berry, Realty, Whippet, Willie Derby, scr; Free Logan, Lady Coronado, Lady Yvonne, Modern Light, 12yds bhd; Dad's Hope, Glandore., Oliver Thorpe 24; Kelp, 48. There are but six left in the Mt. Albert, and with a ehange of stable Mazda having gone under- Fred . Smith's care the son of Nelson Bingen, the Coolgardie, is likely to show considerable improvement. Prince Etawah has been brealcing the tickers on the track of late and has thus come into considerable favour, hut there are several who are more consistent performers who are entitled to thought. Wee Machine has been running with the worst of luck lately, but again he is not a solid cusJ

tomer and Claeo, who has gone lame, will not he a starter. Pukemiro has • still two seconds to the good off 36 yards and of th'e two on the back -mark Francis Lincoln is preferred to Eleawah. The final .summing up reads in favour of: — Francis Lincoln Mazda Prince Etawah from — - MOUNT ALBERT HANDICAP (Harness). Of £120. Class 3.36. ; 1^ miles. Mazda, Prince Etawah, Wee Mach- j ine, scr; Cleao, Pukemiro, 36yds bhd; ; Eleawah, Francis Lincoln, 48. The February Handicap for the "legitimates" is run over IS miles atj •a 3.3-6 bat .and there are nine carded. j Bessie Parrisli, Nicoya and Zanzibar ! share the limit" and Zanzibar and j Bessie ' Parrish should heat Nicoya.

Marble Star, Moko Girl and Barrisn |j Belle are oiae second behind and of Jj these Moko Girl appeals. most, thongh |! the remarkably sudden return to form j1 of Parrish Belle in the Rowe Cup has J doubtleSs not been forgotten by those | who saw the race. If in demand she ' should be very close. Dark McKinney - is an honest plodder who is always likely to be in a place, whilst Wind- I chat is brilliant enough hut seems j just a bit too mueh handicapped to 8 take out. Her turn should come I later on in the country eircuit, where J the fields niay be weaker. Explosion, | since his one ontstanding run as a J trotter last season, has not seemed | to strike gait' properly but has the j heels of anything 'else -in the race if j he does. The race is t:he most open seeia on the course for the last three years and there are likely to be some seconds clipped off several times. The | choice may be: — '•

Zanzibar If Moko. Girl j| Bessie Parrish | ? from — ; \ ^ FEBRUARY HANDICAP jj (Harness). Of £150. Class 3.36. || li miles. , j| Bessie Parrish, Nicora, Zanzibar, jj scr.; Marble Star, Moko Girl, Parrish jj Belle, 12yds bhd; Dark McKinney 36, jj Windchat, 48; Explosion, 72. |j The Moss Davis Memorial, the open jj sprint, has druwai a fine field of 15, jj and the contest is likely to he keen. jj Silver de Oro holds pride of place jj with the fans at present, hut to "Mi- j| sere's" m "d she has some tough nuts 11 to crack before she is >home and hosed. jj For instance, Brentlight, off 12 yards, j is a capable sprinter, .and Raydus and 8 Carnui on the limit can both step it Jj out. The class is 2.47, which is equiv- - alent to a 2.135 mile and most of those ~ carded can do that or better. Dan ' Direct is a very smart sprinter, and || though beaten in a work-out the other j morning is not done with on that account. Great Parrish has whips of I

speed and he also can malce his pre- j sence felt. Ivewpie's Guy, Pageant, ! First Flight and Kewpie's Triumph j are each^ likely to take a hand in the final decision, and the popular choice I anay Be: — 1 | Brentlight First Flight J Great Parrish | from — J MOSS DAVIS HANDICAP I ! (Harness). Of £145. Class 2.47. 15 miles. j Carnui, Kelp, Raydus, Silver de Oro, Te Wahia, scr; Brentlight, Dan j Direct, Great Parrish, Kewpie's Guy, j Nelson Tasker, Pageant, Wilma Dillon, 12yds bhd; Auto Machine, First Flight, Kewpie's Triumph, 24. * * # s

Claeo will be missing from the last , race and this leaves just a dozen to fight out the finish. Most of them .should have been seen out in previous starts and this should give some sort of a line on their form. Pukemiro and Great Fame should be the pick of the limit trio and on 12 yards there are Truanan Direct and Rey de Quest, the latter of whom has any amount of t°e but seems a bit currish. Howeveiv he has changed stables. and this may result in an improvement. Bell Dial has- been persevered with for a long time but the smalls should suit her better. She is trained in private at Wellsford and no line can he got on her condition. Silver Bingen has been working very nieely of late. Hohoro is always a "goer," but Realty and Homeward should he equal to holding him safe. Native Berry is pretty able and Whippet has the necessary time against him. ! Taking a line on their previous perlornaances will go some way to determianng^ the order of favouritism, but the main fancies naay include: Great Fame Realty Homeward from — RAILWAY HANDICAP ! (Harness). Of £120. Class 2.56. 15 miles. i Cleao, Eleawah, Great Fame, Pukemiro, scr; Rey de Quest, Truanan Direet, Worthy Cause, 12yds; Bell Dial, Salver Bingeaa, 24; Ilohoro, Realty 36; Homeward, Native Berry, Whippet, 48^ *\ The second day is next Wednesday.
