WITH THE GALLOPERS

C.J.C. TO-MORROW USEFUL FIELD IN THE MIDDLE PARK PLATE. THE FIELD S REVIEWED. The Canterhury Jockey Club stages its one-day meeting to-morrow, the most interesting event of which is* the Middle Park Plate for two and three-year-olds, weight for age and penalties. , -./■ * * The day opens with the Hornby Handicap, run over nine furlongs, and here Dunedin form will probably play some part in the selection of the favourites. Locksley ran very well at the Otago centre and with 10.2 on his baclt must enter the calculations. Taku Tama, wh'o was at one time owned by Diek Hannon-and leased to Bill Donaldson at Thames, took all sorts of races from five furlong sprints to cnp distances round the Gisborne ciircuiit and since haviing been sold to the West Coast has won a coup-le of cups there. He was raced a thought too mueh in his three-year-old stage, but is now all right once more. Taku Tama should be hard if ready. Elude iaj rather "iffy" but if at her best will run well. She won this race last year. Nightguard is a handy sort and _put upf a fine gallop the other morning. Morepork also went- well and this fellow is' likely to catch the eye later. Fleeting G'lance has just changed ownership, whilst Pixie Gold is a fair sort. The race is very open, with probable preferences for : — Locksley ■ Taku Tama Nightguard from — HORNBY HANDICAP, 9 furs.— Locksley, 10.2; Taku Tama, 10.1; Elude, 9.13; Morepork, 9.5; Fleeting iGlance, 9.4; Pixie Gold, 9.0. =!'• * The Trial Stakes is run under weight for age conditions, with a small field of six. Those which have -shown a bit of form are: — Shelter Eupator Tea Garden from — TRIAL STAKES, two-year-olds 8.0; three-year-olds 8.5; mare 31b allowance; 7 furs. Tea Garden, Rebel Song, 8.5; Shelter, 8.2; King Musket 8.0; Heather Glow, Eupator, 7.11. :]: :S Then comes the Middle Park Plate, with the wonder filly of the present day, Silver Scorn, engaged. Conditions are likely to be wet underfoot at Riccarton as the district has just suffered a heavy storm, but when a filly wins as she did at Dunedin with 9.2, most people will look no further for their favourite. Drumfire, Sir Charles Clifford's recent winner, is there and will be bi'aeketed with Fracas, so the sporting bart has two strings to his bow. It is a tradition of the Chokebore Lodge to try to win this Plate, and the late Sir George was successful on ten occasions and there will be great rejoicing if his son is to lead in a winner. "Granny" MacDonald has Infiation in also, and this horse, for whom 4000 guineas was refused the other day, is fast coming back to form. Delice ran third, last year to Silver Ring and Monastic, whilst Liege Lord is having his first start. Sw.eet Agnes is a very promising sort of two-year-old, and she ha's prospects but the public will undoubtedly go for: — Silver Scorn The Chokebore bracket Infiation from — MIDDLE PARK PLATE; for two and three-year-olds; special weighfcs penalties and allowances; 6 furs. Drumfire, Infiation, tSilver Scorn, 9.7; Delice, 8.11; Fracas, 8.6; Liege Lord, 7.9; Sweet Agnes, 7.6. ;j: * Concentration makes his reappearance in the Midsummer Handicap and the old fellow should run better than he has done of late. Shatter, who won at Dunedin and who was second in this event last year, rnust have a good ehance; Red Heckle also showed signs of improvement at the southern centre, but Jaloux does not seem able to go right though he has the ability. Riri, the full-brother to Chide, won a couple of heats over the range, but is not very certain. Tout le Mond has not done anythingj of note since his' failures at Ellerslie, but has been working well, and he has freshened up. Juniper is a recent winner) and Rocket saluted the judge at a minor meeting. It is a nice level field, with possibilities for: — • Shatter Red Heckle Tout le Mond from — MIDSUMMER HANDICAP, U miles . — C one entrate , 9.3; Shatter, Red Heckle, 8.4; Jaloux, Tout le Mond, 7.9; Juniper, Ramo, 7.2; Rocket, 7.0. * :!: * In the Halswell Handicap is the biggest field of the day, no le.ss than 15 being carded for the six furlongs go. Of these there is a number more or less unknown and this is further complieated by the f act that Drumfire, Idolize and Azalea, who would come in for a large measure of support if . started, are engaged in other^ races. Probably Drumfire will start in this instead of the Middle Park Plate, leaving the fight with Silver' Scorn to Fracas, who has the advantage of weights. Muff is not by any means what his name indicates, and Metal Bird is a winner from Rangiora who shaped handily last time -out. Crash is one that is always dangerous, particularly in the damp1, and Roth'en is not at all a bad sort in the mud. The others are to a large extent novices and their form ,a matter of conjecture. Perhaps Cranford is most susceptible to early improvement. The favourites if they start are likely to be: — Drumfire Metal Bird Azalea In the absence of Drufire or Azalea, Crash and Muff should be fancied. from — HALSWELL HANDICAP, 6 furs— Azalea, 9.0; Muff, 8.9; Denise, Drum Fire, 8.6; Metal Bird, 7.13; Idolise, 7.10; Crash, 7.9; Rothen, 7.6; Manetho, 7.2; Errantry, Cranford, Imper-, aal Spear, Robin Ilo-od, Lucky Dive, 7.0. :!; :r- * « Tlie Ci-aven Plate sees Sir Charles Clifford with Cricket Bat at the head

of nffairs. Next comes Spoon with a stone less but she has not done much for a while. Th'e Quorn has 8.0 and he showed on several occasions that he was capable of running out seven furlongs though he has mostly been cohfined to sprints. Gustavo the full brother to Count Cavour, has not the record of his worthy brother but nevertheless he is'not a bad sort. Grecian Prince seems to be regaining liis form as witness his Dunedin running and Assemble is a moderate. Most of the others are elseWhere engaged. The race should be interesting with preferences for: — The Quorn Cricket Bat Grecian Prince from — CRAVEN PLATE, 7 furs.— Cricket Bat, 9.3; Spoon, 8.3; The Quorn, 8.0; Grecian Prince, 7.11; Assemble, 7.7; Juniper, 7.6; Martian Chief, 7.4; Wise Choice, Azalea, Royal Love, 7.0. :l: =!'• * The Lyttelton Plate for two-year-olds has a field of nine including two Dunedin winners. Counterplay and Trivet. The rest have not shown any form as yet but Bright Shade and the Arrowsmith / Comedy filly have been doing nice track work and might show up. The issue reads: — Trivet Counterplay Silent Flight from — LYTTELTON PLATE HANDICAP, for two-year-olds ; 5 furs. — Counterplay, 8.13; Trivet, 7.13; Nightly, -7.7; Glandovey, Silent Flight, 7.5; Gomely, Bright Shade, Scarlet Rambler, Gaysome, 7.4. , In tlie Post Handicap, _ Locksley again heads the list and if started may go well. Zeebrugge, a_ winner at Dunedin, Water Polo, Idolize, Silver Sight and Importance may provide most opposition. The public may choose: — Locksley Zeebrugge Idolize from — POST HANDICAP, 1 mile.— Locksley, 8.8; Zeebrugge, 8:4; Water Polo, 7.11; Idolise, 7.7; Im>portance, 7.3; Miss Nightraid, Silver Sight, Reserve Fund, Robin Hood, 7-0.
