COMMENCEMENT OF PLAY
ROTORUA CLUB'S FIXTURE LARGE ATTENDANCE FOLLOWS THE OPENING GAMES THREE ROUNDS DECIDED The thirty-first annual No. 1 tournament of the Rotorua Bowling' Club opened yesterday morning at the Government Grounds in beautifully fine weather. Despite the heavy rain which had fallen almost continuously for .two days and eontinued until the early hours of yesterday morning, the day hrolce in brilliant sunshine and most of th3 players were astir early anxious to make an early eommencement with the matches. Following the opening speeches the first round was commenced at the appointed time on greens which had rolled out well >and before a large gallery of spectators. The brightness of the froeks worn by the womenfolk and the different coloured blazers of the various clubs added a touch of colour to the scene. As might be expected, the heavy nature of the greens upset most players' calculations. for the first few heads but as the play progressed the standard of bowling improved.
Welcoming the visiting bowlers, I their wives and families, Mr. MeDo'well, president of the Rotorua Club referred to the pleasure which the members of his club derived from these annual visits of bowlers from other clubs and hoped that they would carry away many recollections of a happy visit. He hoped that all teams would have well-contested matches and that at the end of the series the best team prove the winner. Rotorua tournaments in the past, 'he said, had proved that winning was not a matter of luck, but that success called for consistent play throughout the tournament. Included among the entries, eontinued Mr. McDowell, was- Mr. Alf. Coutts, of the Carlton Club, who had lttended 30 of the 31 .annual tournaments held in Rotorua, the only occasion on which he was not a competitor being during a time he was visiting England. Mr. J. North president of the South Auckland Centre thanlced the committee of the Rotorua Club for the arrangement of the tournament and said that he hoped it would be most enjoyable and that the best two teams would contest the- final game. The Rotorua Club he eontinued, had the distinction of being the largest in the South Auckland Centre and to-day had in the vicinity of 180 members, which showed remarkable progress and called for hearty congratulation to the exeeutive of the club. The club was in an unique position in that it had a certain independence which other clubs had not and for this reason gave the 1-east amount of trouble to the centre and arranged its own tournaments without the assistance of outside organisations. Due to the popularity of Rotorua, its beautiful surroundings and the generosity of the club, the tournaments were always popular. In conclusion, Mr. North hoped that the present tourney would prove as enjoyable as those in the past and it would be a most successful fixture for the Rotorua Club.
