tour of new zealand to commence to-day
Auckland, Monday. A party of 28 boys representing* some of the principal publie sehools of England arrived this afternoon by the Rotorua from London to tour the Dominion. The trip which has been arranged by the School Empire Tour Committee is the tenth of a sex'ies. The boys will remain in the Dominion until March 23, when they will leave from Auckland by the Monowai. They will visit Waitomo - Caves, New Plymouth, Picton, Christchurch, Timaru, Moxxnt Cook, Queensland, Invercargill, Oamaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Palmerston North, National Park, Rotorua, and Hamilton returning to Auckland on March 22. Other tours have visited South Africa, India, Australia, etc. The director of the party is Colonel N. Charteris, C.M.G., D.S.O., who has with him Mr. J. Blackie, a master at Bradfield College. Captain A. J. Wilson, M.C., late of the Que-en's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, is the advance agent. The boys come from most of the hig English public sehools. The following sehools are represented: — Chartex'lxouse, Clifton, Eton, Felsted, Greshaxxx, Harrow, All Hallows, Honiton, Lancing, Marlborough, Mill Hill, Oundle, Sedbergh, St. Edward's, Oxford, Stowe, Tunbridge, Uppingham, Whitgift. The object of the tour is, in the broadest sense of the word, edueational. There can he no hettex* "finishing school" for an English schoolboy than a visit to one of the Dominions. His imagination, outlook and sense of proportion are- broadened and he is brought iixto direct contact with the realities of Imperial history, geography, politics and economics. Some of these boys may make their home in New Zealand; others in due course may undertake work in Parliament ox* some branch of public service at Home. For them the knowledge and experience gained on the tour will he of inestimable advantage, enabling them to approach problems old and new with sympatbetic understanding.
