the egmont meeting FIJI HAS GOOD CHANCE IN EGMONT CUP. AGA KHAN FOR NOLAN
(Notes by
Though' fields are small and full of dual engagements in the first day of the Egmont Racing Club's "summer meeting at Hawera to-day, there is a certain amount of room for speculation. The main event the Egmont Cup has a field of 8 and the Nolan Hack which at one time carried a gold cup and rivalled the Duoro Cup for hacks in the North Island for popularity, has but six acceptors of whom two are in other races. * * * Proceedings open with the Ohawe Hurdles with a card of seven. Recent form is possessed by Blacksmith, Tenacre, Kimbo and Calamine, but Tenacre and Calamine are engaged later on and might prefer these. In the circumsances if they start the public may choose Kimbo Blacksmith Tenacre from — OHAWE HURDLES of 70 sovs. One mile and a half. Blacksmith 10.12, Tenacre 10.10, Kimbo 9.7, Marjoram 9.3, Calamine 9.1, Day Lass, Invictus 9.0. * * * There is a really good muster of second-rate juveniles in the second race no less than 14 being carded. Included are such as Merry Way, Welcome Lu, No Doubt, Royal Dash (placed at Napier) and that good filly Lady Bent. It is very open for little form is as yet exposed. The choice may rest upon Merry Way Welcome Lu No Doubt from — ) JUVENILE HANDICAP of 60 sovs. Five furlongs. Peseheria 8.2, Merry Way 8.1, Welcome Lu, Miss Cavendish 7.13, No Doubt 7.10, Royal Dash 7.9, Prince Reno 7.8, Whaurangi 7.5, Shillong 7.2, Colossian, Lady Bent, Iceir, Bold Baron, Hunting Lodge 7.0. # * * Then comes the Cup with eight acceptors headed by Richfield and Fiji. After his Wellington running few will neglect Fiji though he is not too reliable. Richfield has also disappointed when thought right. Habit is very consistent as his Manawatu form showed whilst Gibraltar is always dangerous though' he ran badly at Stratford. Shrewd is handily placed but Aga Khan will most likely take on the Nolan Hack. Lady Spy is in the Whareora and should do better there though if started she must be considered. Monoloff won an Opunake Cup but does not appeal much. The best if started read Fiji Habit Gibraltar from — EGMONT CUP of 200 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Richfield, Fiji 8.10, Habit 8.5, Gibraltar 8.3, Shrewd 7.3, Aga Khan 7.2, Lady Spy, Monoloff 7.0. ^ *1" Seven are in the Flying with Lady Quex topweight. The 9.0 she has to carry should not trouble her in this company for she has been working well and did not make the trip to Takapuna since the travelling might have upset her but was kept for this. Arvada is a bread-and-butter sprinter in moderate company and with The Tiger may be Lady Quex's hardest opponent. Green Linnet has not done much since winning the big race at Wellington last year whilst Eastertime is in the 8£ fur. race. . Trojan Melody and Headmaster make up the field the most probably supported being Lady Quex The Tiger Arvada from — FLYING HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Lady Quex 9.0, Arvada 7.7, The Tiger 7.6, Green Linnet 7.5, Eastertime, Trojan Melody, Headmaster 7.0.
* * * Only six are in the Nolan Hack and this race which used to be so popular and is a memorial to a fine sport in Sir Robert Nolair has f allen on evil times. Aga Khan is the topweight and if he is reserved should be very hard to head off. Arikitea, trained on the course, has been working well whilst Attentive from Jack Fryer's stable will be knocking. Davistock is a useful sort of hack but the others should hold him safe though Glowlight is not without a chance. Tentcall if he wins will pay a price but the fav- 1 ourites should be Aga Khan Attentive . Arikitea from — NOLAN HACK of 100 sovs. - Eight furlongs and a half. Aga Khan 9.0, Arikitea 8.3, Attentive 8.1, Davistock 8.0, Glowlight 7.11, Tentcall 7.4. * * # * Five of the eight in the Whareora Handicap are in previous races and this mixes things a bit. If reserved, Habit will be hard but he is more likely to take on the Cup though his party may dodge Fiji for this one. Tenacre is in the hurdles but Chief Line who won so handily at Wellington is sure to be well supported. Lucky Alice has not shown much form since she left Te Aroha but on her day is a good one. Lady Spy reads the best of the rest and favourites if started are probably Chief Line Lady Spy Habit from — WHAREROA HANDICAP of 90 sovs. Eight furlongs and a half. Habit 9.5, Tenacre 8.4, Chief Line 8.2, Lucky Alice 8.2, Calamine, Eastertime, Lady Spy, La Crown 8.0. * t * * * Another eight are set down to contest the Waipapa Hack .and Cereal has the main of 8.13. Not too much for his type. Ida Merling is still not too heavily handicapped nor is Royal Papa whilst March Alone and Tenure read as well as anything. Form pointr
