POLICE ATTACKED
EIGKT MEN BATTER CONSTABLE IN SYDNEY. SPECTATORS' APATHY. Sydney, Saturday. A most serious affray occurred in Bay Street, Glebe, last night, when Constable Hermes atternpted to arrest one of three men who were sitting in the gutter, for the use of bad language. Five other men rushed round the corner, and all attacked the constable. He struck one man down, but the others closed in on him, dragged his baton from him and beat him to his knees. He seizecl one 'of them and brought him to earth, but was kicked and battered by the mob. Calkd to Crowd. Drawing his revolver, he fired two shots, but neither toGk elfect. Meanwhile, a call to Regent Street police station had brought out a special squad in the P.D. car. The rescuing squad found that Hermes was still on top of his man and had him handeuffed. The wounded constable was taken to Sydney Hospital, where it was found that one finger was sprained in addition to severe head injuries. In Glenmore Road, P'addington, about 6. 20 p.m., a man who was travelling on a tram jumped ofx and rau away when asked' to show his ticket. Constables Mallon and Marmer, of Paddington, gave chase in a P.D. cai', and the man was overtaken and he turned and attacked Constable Mallon, kicking him in the face and body. Palmer ran from the car and assisted in getting the man, who was taken to Paddington police station and charged.
