m'lean cup POOR SCORING IN SECOND ROUND OF GAMES BOWLERS ON TOP The second round o the McLean Cup matches commenced on Saturday •in idea weather. The wiekets were easy, but all teams gave poor batting displays and small totals were the order. BEST PERFORMANCES Batting Marshall (Albion) 60 Godsalve (City) 46 Bowling Reed (City) 4 for 15 Godsalve (City) .... 5 for 44 Ewert (Old Boys) ... 4 for 34 Lenihan (Albion) ... 3 for 16 Beaumont (Ngongotaha) 4 for 24 Albion Recover An unexpected failure .on the part of the opening Albion batsmen in the match against Ngongotaha at the Government Grounds placed the side. in an awkward position with three wiekets down for 12 runs. However, later in the afternoon three good partnerships somewhat retrieved the position and a total of 155 runs were scored before the final wicket fell. Burton and Lenihan were the openers for Albion, but both lost their wiekets in the first overs of Beaumont and Harris, with only one run having been scored. Marshall and J. 'Hinton were the newcomers, but when appearing well set Hinton ac'eidentally shattered his wicket by playing back and three wiekets were down for 12 runs. With McGill partnering Marshall the pair set out to avert the promised collapse, both watching each ball closely and waiting for the loose ones. Marshall, although patient at this stage was scoring most of the runs, his partner being content to keep his wicket intact. However, the tactics were justified and resulted in the total being carried to 89 before McGill was caught low-down by Beaumont off Hansen for 24 runs. The partnership had added a valuable 77 runs. Gresham gave a catch to Lowry before opening his account and Craw-ford-Watson became associated with Marshall who was approaching the half-century mark. For a short interval the total was now sent along at a good rate, mainly through the agency of Crawford-Watson who scored 32 runs, including six fours, in approximately a quarter of an hour. Partnered by Targett, Marshall reached 60 before being bowled by a beautiful ball from Beaumont. He had played an invaluable innings for Albion, his 60 runs including seven fours. The two tailenders, Targett and Archer defied the Ngongotaha bowlers for some time and when Archer was caught by Hansen, 17 runs had been added for the last wicket. Considering the early collapse. of Albion, the side were fortunate in making 155 runs. The bowling of Ngongotaha, however, was not steady and many runs were given away by indifferent returns to the. wicketkeeper. Ngongotaha also started badly, particulax-ly against the bowling of Lenihan who was difficult to scorc against. D. Hansen and F. Hansen opened, but both were out before double. figures had been hoisted. Dawson also failed to make much headway and it was left to Lowry and Craig to save the situation. This pair advanced the total to 49 runs for the loss of four wiekets, Craig scoring 21 runs and Lowry 15. At stumps, when the total was 55, H. Turton and Iremonger were the not out batsmen. Total for five wiekets 55 Old Boys Collapse Old Boys made a poor showing in the first innings against City and could do little against the accurate bowling of Reed and Godsalve. Only two batsmen reached double figures, Keane making 18 runs and Cottrell 19. The latter, however, was going well when he was badly cut about the -face by a ball which sharply rose off his bat. His retirement was a great loss to Old Boys, who were in a desperate position. The. innings closed for 81 runs. Bowling for City, Reed again struck form and was difficult to play as his figures of four wiekets for 15 runs well indicate. Godsalve was also treated with fespect and was responsible for five wiekets. Newson and Davis opened for City, Keane and Heley being the opening bowlers. Davis did not last long and was out to a catch by Mulligan when seven. Newson, however, was batting confidently and mainly by boundary shots, of which he scored seven, was 33 when bowled by J. Godsalve. Harding failed to get set and after scoring eight runs gave a chance to Hampson which the fieldsman accepted. Although Reed and Bowden contributed little to the total, S. Godsalve and Mason became associated „and carried the total well over the century mark by bright batting. God-
salve was eventually out to a catch by Hampson off Spedding after making an attractive 46 runs. Mason was also caught after making a valuable 22 runs. Generally, however, the batting display had been uninteresting. Ewert, with a bag of four wiekets and an average of 8.5, was the best bowler for Old Boys. Hampson and Heley opened the second innings for Old Boys shortly before stumps, when they had scored 10 runs without loss.
