spectacular crash on western springs track TWO RIDERS IN HOSPITAL

Auckland, Sunday. At the Western Springs Speedway evening teams racing between sides captained by E. Langton and W. Phillips, resulted in a win for Phillips team by ten points to seven. Tho team events showed the. overseas liders to their greatest advantage, the skilled broadsiders working together with remarkable precision. Phillips, tho holder of the gold helmet, was challenged by N. Key, bnt retained his title without difficulty. He also made the fastest time of the evening, lmin 16 2-5sec, and won six events. The following are the results. P. indicates a member of Phillips' team and L one of Langton's riders. First race : M. Silich (P) 1; B. (L) 2. Time 1.25 1-5. Second Race: A. Mattson (P) 1; C. Goldberg (L) 2; R. Tauser (L) 3. Time 1.18 1-5. Tird Race: W. Phillips (P) 1, E. Langton (L) 2; N. Key (P) 3. Time 1-16 2-5. Big Six Championship : W. Phillips 1; N. Key, 2. Time 1.17 3-5. Special 12 Handicap: W. Phillips, 90yds bhd, 1; A. Mattson, 90 yards behind, 2. Time 1.21 3-5. Auckland Handicap. A. Way 15 yards behind, 1; W. Herbert 30 yards behind, 2. Time 1.30 3-5. Two prominent local broadsiders, E. J. S. Day and D. Mattson, were hurt in a spectacular crash. Both received eoncussion and Mattson also had one shoulder injured. They were admitted to the Auckland hospital in ■ a dazed condition. Day's condition was fairly serious, Mattson's injuries were not serious. Day fell while leading in the second i round of a series of team races. When attempting to reach the grass area in the centre of the track, two other competitors, W. Herbert and W. Allen, avoided him, but he was di- ! rectly in the path of Mattson, whose machine bumped him heavily. Both , Mattson and Day were thrown heavily to the ground and rendered un- : conscious. Day was carried to the ambulance, while Mattson, though conscious, also required assistance. Both riders had been successful ! at earlier meetings this season. ,
