SERIOUS WARNINGS
DECLARATION OF REPUBLIC j Rec. Jan. 29, 6.5 p.m. ' London, January 28. Mr. de Valera is silent regarding his plan, but a large party of the community considers the election results a justification for the immediate declaration of a republic. Another of the more responsible section, believes that Mr. de Valera will adopt a cautious attitude and treat the idea of a republic as subservient to other interests. | Mr. Denis Cogan, President of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, told a Daily Telegraph correspondent that the Free State trade with Great Britain had deereased by £11,000,000 in four months ended November 30. The Free State was also committed to an extensive policy of export bounties. Sir Lingard Goulding, Governor of the Bank of Ireland, told the proprietors that the Free State Government bills were now £2,000,000 compared with £600,000 in 1931 and other secutities held had increased by £8,500,000, and unemployment and deStitution were formidable. He earnestly hoped that the publie and private efforts of alleviation would be adequate; 'Referring to the demand that the link between the Free State pound and sterling should be , severed, Sir Lingard Goulding said that it would be difficuit to eontemplate a step fraught with greater possibilities of disaster for the people of the Free State.
