WITH THE GALLOPERS

SATURDAY'S MEETING TAKAPUNA AND NAPIER PROVIDE THE SPORT. THE FIELD S REVIEWED. (Notes by "Canard.")' The Anniversary Day weelc-end usually sees a certain amount of racing in tbe province, the Takapuna Jockey Glub having raced on this date for years, whilst on this occasion Napier, in connection with its resus- ' citation carnival, is staging a oneday meeting. Both being progressive are using th'e win and place tote. * -v * At Takapuna the course, with its bad turns, is always in favour of horses which aref fast enough out of the slips -to get a good position early and those which are slow away rarely are able to make up for the. handicap of a bad "possie" afterwards. This should he borne in mind. The sh'ort straight is alo against the heavilyweighted division. :i: * * The day opens with the Trial Stakes, in which 18 of various sorts are engaged f ew having any deeent forrn to recommend them. Roman Mascot heads the card with 8.8, and though she has improved in her work since her failures at Thames she cannot be regarded in this field as a good thing. She is also in the Carnival Hack, with 7.0. Top Light is a bit way^vard at the post, but has speed if he gets away. Sweet Whisper showed good, consistent form at Thames and may run well. Trickle, though not much good, has whips of early speed and this may be a race which she can pull off. She comes from Thames and is in the hands of the Dufty crowd, who usually get a nice figure when, they win. She has been going very well and can handle the turns. In the minimum division those which have at times shown a bit of form inelude Golden Spahi, Schizanthus, Land Lubber, Tahae Mea and Courthaven. It is a very open race, with considerable possibilities. There may be.support for: — Land Lubber Tahae Mea Sweet Whisper But if a surprise is in the wind, Trickle may provide it. from — T TRIAL STAKES Of £100; 6 furs. Roman Mascot, 8.8; Top Light, 8.6; Sweet Whisper, 7.11; Trickle, 7.10; Magpie gelding, The Highland Chief, Wee Pat, Sub-Station, Golden Spahi, Regardez, Diversion, Lauditory, Drama, Schizanthus, Land'ubbcr, Wee Musk, Tahae Mea, Courthaven, 7.9. Hi ^ * The Orewa Ilighweight has drawn a handy sort of field of. the "devil's dozen." Motere is top with 11.0, but on the present form Tespis with 10.10 should hold him safe.. Later advices j are that Thespis is scratched. Royal Survey is getting into form and may run prominently here. Grand Spirit has been too unlueky recentiy to tie to, but Ruliiig King has a couple of deeent. performances which put him on side. Neil is a useful sort and Buclianan generally tears off a race here. Glenhaupo has been working well, hut if Prineipal is recovered from his fall at Ellerslie, Tom Impey's rose and buttercup hoops should be noticed; Bluef Grey is in this on the hack qualifieation, but his form up north does not give much show. Free Air might do well in this, for he has always been running on at the end of seven and a mile. Demylus, Wee Prince and Ornamental make up the field, Wee Prince reading th'e hest. Form points to: — Ruling King Prineipal Neil from — OREWA HIGIIWEIGHT Of £120; 1 mile 1 fur. Motere, 11.9; Thespis, 10.10; Royal Survey, 10.3; Grand Spirit, 9.11; Ruling King, 9.3; Neil, 9.1; Glenhaupo, Prineipal, Blue Grey, Free Air, Demylus, Wec Prince, Ornamental, 9.0. & -f = The Carnival Hack six sees a moderate field for Takapuna. The pride of Te Awamutu, Lucidus, has the top burden, a five pound lump more than Moonfleet. Either should run well. United ' is a very unlueky sort, but Holly Lu is better than some folks think and again Tom Impey may lead is a winner. Mungatoon is useful, but in a six on this course Miss Lorraine, who is owned by a Shore resident, appeals more. Currajong showed signs of returning form at Thames, but is more suited "When the sting is out. Escalus, if ready, will be hard under 7.4. Marmorate, who has shown a lildng for the course, is better liked than Ioman Mascot, but the form horses are: — • Miss Lorraine Moonfleet Holly Lu from — CARNIVAL HACK, Of £125; 6 fur. Lucidus, 8.12; Moonfleet, 8.7; United, 7.13; Holly Lu, Mungatoon, 7.12; Miss Lorraine, 7.11; Currajong, 7.7; Escalus, 7.4; Marmorate, 7.2; Roman Mascot, 7.0. * * There are only nine left in the Takapuna Cup and on her recent form Speedmint is sure to be heavily supported. And with reason. Nevertheless, Merry Damon and Sunny Sky, the Gisborne stablemates, might take a bit of beating, for Speedmint is a mare of moods. Trishna won over the holidays, beating fair sorts, but this company is better than he has beaten so far. Maori Boy, if it were wet, should go close, for he has already won at the Shore; however, he is not fancied in hard going. Great Emblem seems just good enough to run into places and may find the distance of 11 furlongs and 40 yards too far. Jalldy Karo (whose name, by the way, means "go like blazes") has not yet compassed this distance, nor has Tarporley, thought the latter is accustomed to going a highweight distance, but is very hard to keep sound. If it is hard he is unlikely to face the p'ost. Gay Idea ran well enough in the Auckland Cup to suggest a chance for him on the minimum, espeeially since he is out of the Powells' hands. Though the class is the poorest for years, yet there is the makings of a deeent race with any amount of chances for a svrprise. TJie issue may inelude Merry Damon, Sunpy Sky, Speedmint, Trishna aud Gay Ideal narrowed down to: — Speedmint

Sunny Sky Gay Idea from — TAKAPUNA CUP, Of £300; 1 mile 3 fur 40 yds. Merry Damon, 9.0; Sunny Sky, 8.13; Speedmint, 8.7; Trishna, 7.10; Maori Boy, Great Emblem, 7.9; Jalldy Karo, 7.6; Tarporley, 7.2; Gay Idea, 7.0. * * * The two-year-olds have their race in the Calliope Handicap, for which seven are paid up for. Rereatu won should be again hard whilst Gay so comfortably down south that he Sheila is also a speedster worth noting. King Mestor won a double at " Thames, hut beat nothing much. Deputy Ruler impressed "Canard" hy his Ellerslie showing and he should be the likely improver of those mentioned so far. The oth'er three, Solomon, Lorelle and Lagoon, have done nothing so far to give them preference over. — • Rereatu Deputy Ruler Gay Sheila from — CALLIOPE HANDICAP, Of £150; 5 furs. Rereatu, 8.11; Gay Sheila, 8.6; King Mestor, 8.5; Deputy Ruler, 7.8; Solomon, 7.7; Lorrelle, 7.5; Lagoon, 7.0. =:= * * * The seven furlong Zealandia Handicap sees the defection of Lady Quex. . Paganelli has 9.7 to lump but he is partial to the course and has won some good races there. Sunny Sky, if started in this, must be hard too, but the cup distance should suit her better. Rosshire, who has only come back to work after a spell due to unsoundness, was a real good one before he went wrong and if he can reproduce his form should do well enough. He may need a race or two yet. Whakapara is an in-and-out sort of customer. Ran like a hairy goat at Ellerslie and then came out. and won pointless at Thames; Chief Cook is improving with every start, whilst Eager Rose showed up at her last two starts. She has early toe. Marechal is handy if well, but should be held safe hy Gay Marigold after that filly's showing in the Derby. Brampton is not bad and Moonfleet is in the Carnival. A good field with tickets for: — Gay Marigold Ohief Cook Sunny Sky (if reserved) In her absence, Eager Rose should run well. from — ZEALANDIA HANDICAP, Of £150; 7 furs. Paganelli, 9.7; Lady Quex, 9.4; Sunny Sky, 9.0; Rosshire, Whakapara, 8.0; Chief Cook, 7.11; Eager Rose, Marechal, 7.4; Gay Marigold, 7.2; Brampton, Moonfleet, 7.0. ❖ * * The Hauraki Hack nine has Master Brierly as top of the ladder and on his running at "Ellerslie he should he handy at the death-knock. Glenrata went a very peculiar race at Thames : and is under observationj by the fol- : lowers of form, since it may be that he has turned sour. And it may not he. Valpai is fair, and Grand Spirit is in earlier. Hawthorn has recent winning form, and Pelting, also. So have Black Marlin and Merry Lap. A very cpen race, with the issue possibly between: — Master Brierly Hawthorn | Pelting i from — j HAURAKI HACK I Of £120; 9 furs. Master' Brierly, 9.2; Glen Rata, 8.8; ; Valpai,, 8.4; Grand Spirit, Hawthorn, J 8.2; Pelting, 7.11; Black Marlin, Re- ' viver, Gay Broney, Merry Lap, 7.0. i :f =f =S * | Both Hawthorn and Valpai are in are in the previous race, which com- j plieates the issue for the Ferry Handicap a bit. Delrain is to carry 8.10, i and should run a sound race with this. j However, it is probably Sunny Bach- j elor's turn to be in, for he ran too badly to be true when heavily backed , at Ellerslie after showing up the first j day. Limex- is a good type for seven, i whilst Broken Rule won at Trentham, j Of the others, Hawthorn, Blue Grey I and Sweet Whisper are engaged elsewhere, but despite •this the favourites may be: — Sunny Baehelor Delrain ' j Limex | from — • j FERRY HANDICAP, Of £100; 7 furs. Delrain, 8.10; Valpai, 8.6; Limex, I 8.5; Hawthorn, 8.4; Loyd Willonyx, 1 8.3; Sunny Baehelor, 8.2; Broken; Rule, 7.8; Radiant Sun, 7.6; Blue Grey, Sweet Whisper, 7.0.
