OPOTIKI AMNUAL ALLOY AND VALSIER ' LIKED IN CUP BABIES FANCIED IN STAKES

(Notes by

Events have filled well for the annual race meeting of the Opotiki Jockey Club on Friday and this oldestablished club is to be eongratulated upon its courage in maintaining the sport in its district. There are seven raees set down for decision and though there is not a great deal of quality in the fields, this heing due to the f act that the meeting eomes ofF on Friday the day bef ore the first day at Takapuna, which naturally stopped many owners from entering, yet there are sufficient horses engaged to make an interesting showing provided they all turn out. Bef ore reviewing the fields punters might as well take a note of the various. engagements. Here they are : — Grantham — Maiden, East Coast, Highweight and Consolation. Potoa Lad. — Maiden, East Coast. Keith Hall. — Maiden, East Coast, Haclc Cup.

Satalite. — Maiden, East Coast. Lady Palmerston. — Maiden, East Coast. Nightwatch Mare. — Maiden, East Coast. Aroha Pono. — Maiden. Solo Song. — Maiden Stalces. Princess Bede. — Hack Cup, Cup. Gigantic. — Hack Cup, Stakes, Consolation. i T-J Master Arch. — Hack Cup, Highweight. Winter Boy. — Hack Cup, Consolation. Intaglio. — Hack Cup, East Coast Highweight, Consolation. Silver Division. — Hack Cup, Cup, Highweight. Gainsfid. — Haclc Cup, Consolation. Bonny Joyce. — Stakes. I British Columbia. — Stakes. No Fooling. — Stakes, Highweight. Marmoration. — Stakes, Consolation. Musquil. — Stakes. Miss Hornet. — Stakes, East Coast. Alloy. — Cup, Highweight. Valsier. — Cup, Consolation. Flying Prince. — Cup. Llanore. — Cup, Highweight, Kahunolce. — Cup, Consolation. Transaction. — Cup, Highweight. Little Wonder. — Cup, Highweight, Consolation. The braclcets are. — Stakes, Gigantic/ Bonny Joyce. Cup. — Princess Bede/Flying Prince. Consolation. — Gainsfid/Kahunoke. The first race is for the real ! "roughies," horses which have never j won a race. Some of them never will. Weight-for-age is the main and there | are three four-year-oids beiow Granthan at the top of the handicap. | Thero are Potoa Lad from Phil I Brady's stable, Keith Hall, trained by i Ned Prenter at Paeroa and Satalite who aceording to records has yet to run his first race. All carry nine stone and on his form at Kawakawa, Keith Hall will have to do better than he has done as yet. Potoa Lad also has not yet started if records be correct, but Phil Brady knows that littlo fish are sweet and the Potoa gelding may well be set for something like this. Lady Palmerston has the mare's weight, 8.12, and she has on her sire's side the breeding for a sprinter. Her sire Royal Divorce (Iving's Proctor/Jessamine) when owned by Eric Riddiford won a C.J.C. handicap and an Eclipse stakes and put up fine times up to nine furlongs. Lady Palmerston may have 4sprint qualitips. Next is an unnamed mare by Nightwatch and her breeding which is all that one knows about her is not the best in the world. The Fort William stock were more noted for staying than sprinting. A survey of her condition should tell the tale better than anything else. Aroha Pono is by the getter of early speedsters Colossus, but the fact that though this horse has reached four years old the records are completely silent as to previous running, is in itself a bit significant. Solo Song by Ilunting Song from Ash Tray, whose name by the v/ay, does not appear in any records for the past 20 years, may be a bit more classy, but her name is also missing from the list. However, even Phar Lap had to start somewhere and at weight-for-age the three-year-old filly has a distinct advantage. Granthan is the other contestant, but as he figures with 8.3 in the East Coast six, 8.0 in the Highweight and 7.0 in the Consolation it is hardly likely that he will start .here to give weight away to the whole field. This is a race full of dual entries as previously indicated, but given a start the issue may include. — Solo Song Potoa Lad Aroha Pono from — MAIDEN PLAT.E Of £35; weight-for-age; 6 furs. Potoa Lad, Lady Palmerston, Keith Hall, Satalite, Aroha Pono, Nightwatch — Fort William mare, Solo Song. * * * The Hack Cup is next to cause worry, and here the list is headed by that good mare Princess Bede, but she is not likely to be here, since she. has been leased by Nudger Cucksey and is engaged at Takapuna, on the second day. Gigantic when in Cox's stables at Te Aroha last year won the Hikutaia Stakes at Thames beating such as Master Brierly and the Hobson Handicap (Gfurs) at Takapuna beating- Miss Lorraine and Te Waipu amongst othei's in 1.16 3-5 on a heavy track. A repetition of that form should make him hard. Master Arch who- is at least 14 years old has for 'the past six years mostly figured in steeplechase events and has under W. Donaldson's care notched quite a bit ,'of prize money. It is probable that the seven furlongs will be a bit short for him. He is better suited by the high-weight later in the day. Winter Boy is also no chicken started his racing career in 1927, but in 1931 he had a win and a second at the Opotiki meeting', the win in the Coun'ties Handicap of 7 furlongs in 1.35. He may, if fit, run well here, but is also in the Consolation. Intaglio is well enough bred to win anything,

being by Lapidary whose stock develop early speed from that good ■ mare Gold Plane. Last year he ran twiee, both times at Tauranga and was third to Dark Marble and Star Lap and second again to Dark Marble. Nothing attempted nothing done this season. Keith Hall has been dealt with before. Silver Division, who is an aged gelding by Valkyrian from a sound line mare in Ihapuna. However, he has contested eight raees without once causing the judge to lose his eyesight peering for his colours. Gainsfid has a second to his credit. at Gisborne this season in his only two starts. However, the company was pretty weak, Provided they go . to the post the public will probably support — Gigantic Gainsfid Keith Hall jj from — | OPOTIKI HACK CUP I Of £42 10s; 7 furs. \ Princess Bede, 9.5; Gigantic, 8.9; j Master Arch, 7.10; Winter Boy, 7.6; ! Intaglio, 7.5; Keith Hall, Silver Di- j vision, Gainsfid, 7.0. i * I The Waioeka Stakes for two- and m three-year-olds, weight for age, with f penalties, is the classic of the meeting and earries a blue ribband to the winner. Eight are carded with Gigantic and Bonny Joyce bracketed. The stable is likely to rely on the

two-year-old which has shown a bit of form in two-year-old heats though running out of a place. British Columbia from the same stable as Alloy has been a promising hack and though • unsuccessful at Thames should find 'this to his liking. By Top Gallant he gets well out from the barrier. No Fooling has had one start to date and finislied 100 yards last in a fourhorse field at Ngaruawahia. Solo Song if started here, might give cheelc. Marmoration and Miss Hornet are unknown, but Musquil has shown fair two-year-old form. Usually in these classics the "babies" if riders can be got to do the weight have a pull and on those lines selectors may choose — Bonny Joyce British Columbia Musquil ! from — • WAIOEKA STAKES ■Of £42 10s; 5 furs. Gigantic, 9.2; British Columbia, 8.6; No Fooling 8.6; Solo Song, 8.3; Marmoration, 8.3; Miss Hornet, 8.3; Musquil, 6.9; Bonny Joyce, 6.9. j JjS ifr ) Alloy tops the cup and he is a good one. He has recent form at I Thames and Dargaville winning the President's Handicap at each. Valsier in two starts this year has a win and a third and 8.7 is not anything l!ke the burdens ?ie used to carry. Neither Princess Bede nor Flying Prince are likely to be there, both are now leased away. Llanore, good up to a mile, may find ten furlongs too long, and reads better in the highweight though 9.12 is a big weight for a little 'un. Kahunoke. has registered a win and two seconds in five starts this year and should go well. Tiansaction from the same stable as Protomint was very promising as a two-year-old and was finishing on at Ellerslie at Christmas. She should be hard. Of the three others Little Wonder, Silver Division and Intaglio, ! nonG appeals on form which points ! to— ; Alloy Kahunoke Valsiejr from — i OPOTIKI CUP Of £110; 1:1 miles. Alloy, 9.0; Valsier, 8.7; Flying; Prince, 8.2; Llanore, 7.11; Princess , Bede, 7.8; Kahunoke, 7.1; Transac- | tion, Little Wonder, Intaglio, Siiver j Division, 7.0. ! $ * The East Coast Handicap sees ' many acceptors with other starts and | consequently a review of form is fut- j ile. If started there may be money j for — Keith Hall Potoa Lad Intaglio from — EAST COAST HANDICAP Of £40; 6 furs. Intaglio, 9.0; Keith Hall, 8.5; Grantham, 8.3; Nightwatch mare, Miss Hornet, No Fooling, Potoa Lad, Lady Palmerston, 8.1. ;J; jj: Much will depend in the Highweight on the form shown previously j since again all are elsewhere engag- i ed. The pull in the weight should suit Transaction and Llanore, but Al- j loy for all his 10.12 is very honest. ' Master Arch may do well here on the j minimum and selectors if'they go to the post may include — Transaction Llanore Master Arch from — BAY OF PLENTY HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of £40; 1 mile. Alloy, 10.12; Llanore, 9.12; Transaction, 8.3; Little Wonder, Master Arch, Intaglio, Grantham, Silver Division, No Fooling, 8.0. * « In the Consolation Handicap all previous winners are eliminated and this malces it impossible to sort out the field, since all are in previous raees. Anything might show up, but if eligible the selection may he — Valsier Kahunoke/Gainsfid bracket Gigantic from — CONSOLATION HANDICAP Of £40; 6 furs. Valsier, 9.7; Gigantic, 8.7; Kahunoke, 8.6; Little Wonder, 7.5; Winter Boy, Intaglio, Gainsfid, Grantham, Marmoration, 7.0.
