OATS IN WAIKATO
FIFTY ACRES AT KIWITAHI. I Farming methods of 20 years ago in the Waikato, when large areas were used for growing cereal crops, are re1 called by the fact that Mr. F. Smith, of Kiwitahi, is now harvesting 50 acres of oats, says the Independent. | In 1912 several hundreds of acres 1 of land in about the same pai't of Kiwitahi were growing oats and barley. The fern-covered land, had just recently been ploughed up and the cereal crop was one stage in working up the soil ready for sowing down in permanent pasture. Mr. Smith brought his binder out of the shed where it had been unused for eight years, and found that as a result of periodic attention it was in good working order, and so the crop was cut without delay. > The unusual sight of such a large area in stoolc has been commented on by passers-by.
