bay of islands MODERATE FIELD S CARDED IN KAWAKAWA HACK FIXTURE BEARING ON FUTURE RACING

(Notes by

Alth'ough the class is nothing very wonderful at Kawakawa on Saturday, the old-established Bay of Islands meeting usually provides a bit of a j liire on future runners at meetings like Matamata and Rotorua since in the minor events much the same class of horse is^ catered for. * * * * Saturday will commence with the Hokianga Plate of 54 furlongs under maiden conditions and though so far they have not broken their maiden 'status there are one or two fairly well-known names amongst the acceptors. Keith Hall has several minor placings whilst though Minster did not notch a win' at Waipapakauri he showed a bit of pace. Miss'Monui and Riponui are promising whilst Ornamental must break it soon. Two which are a bit allied and will be coupled are Bush Lawyer and Bayfield the latter being a promising colt if in condition. Yery open with fancies taking a wide range. Favourites' may be Keith Hall Ornamental Bayfield-Bush Lawyer Bkt. from. — HOKIANGA PLATE of £40; 5 4 furlongs. L. Suzanne, K. Theory, Valador, Minster, Bischoff, Keith Hall, Mater, Miss -M"onui, Pirimint, Riponui, Mohau, Ornamental, Bush Lawyer, Bayfield, 8.0; Vibrant, Wharemanea, 7.10. * * * There is a distinctly better class engaged irf the Kaikohe Hack Six including recent winners in Radiant Sun, Black Marlin, Blue Grey and Hone Heke, all of whom have earned brackets within the last month. Frothblower who lumped 10.10 into a.placa at Waipapakauri has only 9.3 here and on that may be hard. He is also in the Maromaku and Russell Hack races and whichever he starts in he should make his p-resence felt. TT /MTrmroy o rl i a rrf* Rim ~XfJ VlO 1?; 1T1 "fcTlfi

Gup has an advantage in the burden of 101b. Black Marlin is also in the Cup and the seven and either this or the seven should suit him best. Monanui is a fair youngster and Blue Grey is consistent having only once been out of a place in the last six starts but in ragtime company. Hone Heke is useful but little is known of Knigbt Theory or Creation though the latter has run a few times unplaced. Providing they face the barrier the support may be forthcoming for Black Marlin Blue Grey Monanui from. — KAIKOHE HACK HANDICAP, Of £40; 6 furlongs. Frothblower 9.3, Radiant Sun 8.7, Black Marlin 8.1, Monanui 8.0, Blue Grey 7.8, Hone Heke, Ornamental, K. Theory, Creation 7.0. * * * * In the Northland Counties Handicap, a race of 6f. with residential qualifications, there are seven carded of whom all are elsewhere engaged except Gainful, who by the way is a brother to Zoom, one of the most promising jumpers ever seen out at Ellerslie who was expected to win a Great Northern but broke a fetlock on the flat training. If Gainful is as good as his relative it is all over but he has not previously started and may be too green. The main tfring 'in this race will be to know what is going to face the starter and on the assumption that they will do so one selects to run well Royal Potoa Snow Prince Tea Chat from. —

NORTHLAND COUNTIES HANDICAP of £40*; 6 furlongs. Tea Chat 10.3, Snow Prince 9.2, Royal Potoa 7.10, Star Turn, Bischoff, Gainful, Lady Suzanne 7.0. * ♦ * * There is a very nice little stake for the Kawakawa Hack Cup a matter of £70 to" the winner and it is likely that of the eight acceptors most will give it a flutter. Considering Teels ran so prominently in the Auckland Cup and won the Te Awamutu Cup from far better horses the 9.7 she is called upon to carry is not oppressive. If fit she should be hard to head off. However she has to give away ten lb. to Thespis and Geo. Hodgson thinks that his horse after the amount of racing he has had carrying 11.0 to win a mile under winter conditions and winning over all sorts of distances since should put up a great fight. Thespis is now out of Hector Gray's hands and his owner will not hear of his being beaten. There is a drop of 151b to the next Radiant Sun who won the middle distance race in the Far North. However the top two are better horses but Radiant Sun should run well. Black Marlin has always been finishing on at the end of a mile even in good Ellerslie company but the distance seems a bit far and he may prefer easier muttan in other races. Of the other four Blue Grey has the best credentials. The popular fancies are sure to be Thespis Teels Radiant Sun from : — • KAWAKAWA HACK CUP of £100; 14 miles. Teels 9.7, Thespis 8.11, Radiant Sun 7.10, Black Marlin 7.5, Monanui 7.4, Blue Grey, Minster, Creation 7.0. * * * * Hoihama has a real pudding for his double at Waipapakauri and with a pound under eleven stone has plenty to think about. Frothblower who has ' carried some big burdens at other times is better treated with 10.5. Of the rest all but the maiden Wharemanea of whom absolutely nothing is known are in other races (most of them at least three) and this consequently makes things a bit cloudy lf started there may be money foi i Frothblower i Keith Hall Hoihoma

from. — MAROMAKU HACK HANDICAP, of £40; 6 furlongs. Hoihoma 10.13; Frothblower, 10.5; Hone Heke 7.9, Keith Hall 7.2, Knight Theory, Lady Suzanne, Bush Lawyer, Wharemanea 7.0. * * * * Much the same thing applies to the Ohaeawai County Handicap and if they go to the post the public may select Snow Prince Tea Chat Radiant Sun from. — OHAEAWAI COUNTY HANDICAP, of £40; 7 frulongs. Tea Chat 10.3, Snow Prince 9.2, Radiant Sun 8.3, Miss Monui, Mater, Minster, Star Turn, Pirimint 7.0. * * * * The Pakaraka Handicap six has drawn nine of whom all are elsewhere carded. If they start the fancies may be Royal Potoa Hone Heke Bush Lawyer fron^ — PAKARAKA HACK HANDICAP, Of £40; 6 furlongs: Hoihoma 10.13, Blue Grey, Royal Potoa 8.10, Hone Heke, 7.9, Creation 7.3, Keith Hall 7.2, Knight Theory, Lady Suzanne, Bush Lawyer 7.0. * * * Six are set down to contest the Russell Hack seven and as all are likely to have started earlier in the day and most of them won they will probably have to cart a bit of lead extra. However the most promising should be Thespis Hone Heke

Black Marlin •> .from. — RUSSELL HACK HANDICAP, Of £40; 7 furlongs. Thespis 9.7, Frothblower 9.2, Black Marlin 8.0, Monanui 7.19, Hone Heke, Ornamental 7.0. | * * * . As a matter of fact the only horses with any real credentials at the meeting are Keith Hall, Frothblower, Radiant Sun, Black Marlin, Blue Grey, Hone' Heke, Snow Prince, Royal Potoa, Teels, Thespis and Hoihoma^ Tea Chat can gallop if he likes, but he very rarely likes. Hoihoma has too/ much weight. Thespis, Black Marlih, and Frothblower should do well (at the
