Larwood opened with an off field. Woodfull reached 51 with a neat stroke to square l'eg, Ten runs came !off the Notts man's first two overs. Allen was bowling" consistently well. 'Larwood resorted to a massed leg field, Richardson swinging one neatly for a four. He also got a crisp shot for four past point off Allen in the next over. Verity came on at 148, bowling with faultless length, Woodfull having to play every ball. Wood'ful reached 61 by a superlative midon shot. Verity disturbed Richardson and one ball fiew over his stumps. When the South Australian reach- . ed 21, he fell into Larwood's leg trap, hitting one forward to short leg where Allen made a fine catch. Richardson hit three fours", but he did not play with his usual dash. Larwood's average was now three for 56. He had a circle of five men around Richardson: Woodfull, who was cautious of the trap, was now partnered by Grimmett. The captain got a beautiful mid-on three-, but lost the slow bowler, Allen knocking down his leg stump, when he had reached six. Allen at this stage had taken two for 45. Wall lasted only five balls from Allen, who clean bowled him. Woodful, now accompanied by O'Reilly, went to 68 with a fine leg glance. O'Reilly non-plussed Larwood by slamming hira through covers for four. This was his last stroke, for Larwood with the next ball sent his leg stump hurtling. Ironmonger had a short run, Allen clean bowling him. Woodfull had a fine reception after carrying his bat for 73. The innings lasted 235 minutes, and England won by 338 runs. A thunder storm broke shortly after the close of the match.
