N.Z. PRODUCTS NOT AN ATTRACTIYE PRCIPOSITION AT PRESENT. mr. husheer's view. Tobacco-growing in New Zealand does not at the present hold out an ■ attractive prospect to oth'er than those who have contracts for the leaf grown. Mr. Gerhard Hussheer, chairman of di- . rectors of the National Tobacco Company, Ltd., in the directors' report, comments: — ; "The production of N.Z. leaf has kept pace with our present requirements, and when the remainder of last year's crops will have all been taken delivery of, the total yield will be in the neighbourhood of 900,0001b, representing a value of about £70,000. Most of this money has gone to the Nelson district. Apart from our own, there are large stocks held of N.Z. grown 8 leaf for which no outlet can be found | either here ir abroad, as the markets 8 are over-supplied and export 'possi- [ bilities non-existent. Practically all . this leaf will become a dead loss. As | a precaution against ovef -production, we had to consideraby reduce the area under cultivation for the eoming season and sorne of our growers had consequently to accept a cut in th'eir acreage, while others had to go without a contract at all. There are, besides, numerous applicants on our waiting list all eager to grow for us; unfortunately they cannot be accommo dated until an increased demand warrants an extension of acreage and this can hardly be hoped for as we seem now to have definitely reached saturation point, beyond which the process of absorption cannot continue either of leaf or manufactured tobacco."
