WITH THE GALLOPERS

"Canard")

WELLINGTON MEETING ANTIQUE AND GREAT STAR FANCIIED IN 1 CUP THE QUORN AND AUTOPAY

(Notes by

Fields are exceptionally good for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer meeting -today and betting is likely to take a wide f ange. * * . * * The Trentham Highweight opens the ball with a field of 14 hailing- from both islands. Juggle heads the list with 10.8 with' Saltpot, Jayson and Beau Gallante a pound less. Any of these may run well and if Jayson has picked up on his appearance at Ellerslie he may be handy. Juggle is well seasoned. Down the list a bit are Blacksmith, Palace, Chile and Flower and the winner might come from chese, but the best read Juggle Jayson Blacksmith. Nightguard is now scratehed. * * * * The Wellifigton Stakes, a weight-for-age over the straight Trentham five furlongs has an excellent field, the best of last season's two-year-olds meeting practically the best of this. On his ability to begin few will go past Diatomous, but Inflation last? year also showed toe from the barrier. Lack did not please at Ellerslie, when seen there last, whilst Midinette may find the journey a bit short. One that cannot be ruled out is Princess Doreen, who beat Diatomous over five. Gaurantee may like six better and Fracas is better than she showed in Ellerslie. It loolced there as if the right-handed going did not suit h'er and Trentham has no turns to upset. Of the others Golden Hair, and Good Hunting read the best but form points to the two-year-olds. Diatomous Princess Dcreen Fracas * * * * The Apprentices' Plate, or as it is more commonly known "The Madmen's Derby" run over seven furlongs under hack conditions with embryo jocksters in the pigskin usually leaves punters breathless. It is literally years since a favourite has won. With a field of 23 and all sorts of form it is a race which the wisest will view with a prescient eye from the top of the stand not the front of the machine. However there is some recent form for Aiguille, Argentic (a good sort this), Azalea (who will have the same boy as at Ellerslie), Eminent (at Wairarapa), Chock Say, Glowlight and Purse. Given decent handling there may be success for Chock Say Azalea Argentic * * * The second heat for two-year-olds, a handicap event is run next under the name of the Fitzherbert Handicap (five). Golden Hair and Counterplay are in +he Stakes, and are more likely to stai't here. Porotiti is certainly a coming sort as his recent form shows while Pegged Exehange is rapidly improving. On to-day's news Pegged Exehange should be a winner. Lady Nan is said to he going particularly well and has beaten most of the others she has met. Bon Rapide unless the Wellington babies are much worse than they appear on paper cannot have much sh'ow on his Auckland running, whilst Epigram reads a lot better since the Episode filly is settling down. Catalogue might be a surprise winner but form goes to single out Porotiti Lady Nan Pegged Exehange :|c * * At this stage the main event of the day the Wellington Cup is down for decision and the field is as good as ever. Antique heads the; list and the Tonbridge gelding despite his 9.5 is sure to be somewhere handy. Second (thcugh placed third) in the Auckland Cup' with 8.10, winner of the Summer Cup (1|) with 9.1, third in the A.R.C. Handicap with 9.9 (11) and second in the Clifford Plate with 9.1 (11) are his last four performances and after that it will be a bold man who will leave him out of his ealculations. He must run well if form is

ever to he regarded at all. Ooneentrate though looking well seemed to "Canard" to have slipped a bit but the breed is the best and he meets Antique on 21b better terms than last time. He won the race in 1930 and his dam won it ten years earlier. He is still likely to be in the hunt. Great Star is the one likely to give most trouble to the top weight for he is quite at home over twelve furlongs, and won the Grandstand Handicap easily in 2.6 4-5. Then there is Gold Trail who beat both Antique and Ooneentrate in the Clifford in better time than Great Star's. Seatown has th'e hardest to do on his recent form but Jaloux who was second last year is apparently coming right. He disappointed at Ellerslie but always runs better at Trentham. Red, Heekle has been galloping well and has a show but it is an outside one. Of the others, lightweight chances are held by such as Tout le Mond, Fiji, Juniper; and especially Rocket who may he a rod in pickle. However going on form the most sought after are likely to be Antique Great Star Gold Trail * * * The Anniversary Handiciap has drawn a nice field of good class milers. There is not a great deal to choose between them as a matter of fact and the race is probably the hardest of the day. Shatter is good but has a lot to lump-. Awaken and Richfield are the hopes of Taranaki. Gold Pit and Tippling have recent wins but Drumfire may beat the lot. In a very open race the choice may be Drumfire Shatter Awaken # * ♦ The second leg of the double, the Telegraph', has a good list of tiptop sprinters headedvby Antopay. On his recent running the 9.4 he has to carry should not stop him. Last year Green Linnet (10th favourite) beat Cadland and let the books have a real joy spasm. Golden Wings is said to have improved on h'er Ellerslie condition. Cricket Bat was in the lead for six several times at Ellerslie but La '

Moderne and The Quorn are worthy of the most serious thought. Orapai won during the holiday period and if Lordly Knight rep-eats his' run in the Bowen Handicap he may be hard but his time will be beaten at Trentham. Of the others Grecian Prince and The Tiger seem the bestv They will provide a fine race with favouritism inelining to Autopay The Quorn La Moderne ♦ * * The day ends with the Ruapehu Handicap and it is a motley field. Form is a bit mixed and in view of earlier engagements the public may prefer Slippery Huia Belle Solitaire II. The second day is on Saturday.
