BIG PLANE DEPARTS
CROWDS SEE SOUTHERN CROSS LEAVE FOR GISBORNE PERFECT TAKE OFF Several hundred people gathered at the Te Ngae landing ground yesterday afternoon to witness the departure of the big monoplane "Southern Cross" and "Smithy" and his crew. Taxing up the eastern arm of the aerodrome the big plane turned and swept into the wind making a perfect take-off, circled the aerodrome and winged its way eastwards for Gisborne. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith was at the eontrols and in addition to his crew had Messrs. Beau Shiel, Lister and Platt as passengers. Flights had been given during the morning and with perfect flying weather those who went up were most enthusiastic. On every hand were amateur photographers and the crew posed for a moment bef ore the big plane whilst a hurricane of clicks showed that the visit of the plane would not go down unhonoured in the family album. After bidding good-bye to his friends and sending a farewell message to the people of Rotorua "Smithy" rewed up his engines and away she went, amid the waving of handkerchiefs and the cheers of the crowd.
