ORIGINAL SANTA CLAUS.
ANNIVERSARY OF SAINT'S DEATH QBSERVED BY ITALIANS. Barie (Italy), Saturday. St. Nieholas, the traditional original of Santa Claus, was feted throughout Italy on Tuesday on the 1580th anniversary of his death. Here, where he is huried, the Archbishop of Barie, Monsignor Augusto Curi, presided over special commemorative services* in the St. Nicola Church. Thousands of persons knelt before a coffin containing the saint's bones, from which an oil with medicinal properties is supposed to flow. j British children write letters to | Santa Claus telling him what they want for Christmas, but here the children think a witch named Be- j fana brings their presents. ■ i
