WACO PLANE'S MISHAP
SHORT OF PETROL HAS TO MAKE FORCED LANDING The Waco plane which accompanied the Southern Cross for part of the journey had an adventruous time. Piloted by Captain Bolt it lost sight of the big monoplane and came along on the western side of the Putaruru ranges. There dense fog prevailed and after searching for an opening the pilot found that he was getting very short of petrol. There was nothing left but to run for it and at top speed climbing high to get a slant if the petrol gave out he made for Cambridge. There he landed and refilled his tanks. The Rotorua Aero .Clnb's Moth also had considerable trouble and finding the visibility so bad Squadron-Leader Butler made for Hamilton where he landed in fine weather and later set off, arriving at Rotorua about 6.45 p.m. As these two planes darried the charts it will be realised that the pilot of the Southern Cross had no easy
task, especially as he was flying blind for some time.
