WHOLE DAY TAKEN TO SECURE 211. RUNS BIG LEAD ON AUSTRALIA

— By Telegraph — Copyrlght).

Rec. Jan. 17, 11 p.m. Adelaide, January 17. Conditions were perfect all round and the wieket easy for the resumption of the third test to-day. Recognising their immense responsibility, Jardine and Wyatt resumed cautiously and the captain was the subject of insistent barraclting for tlie slowne-ss of his batting. Jardine was eertainly unenterprising. , With 91 up, O'Reilly's doggedness .was rewarded, Wyatt turning one low to Wall, who dived and made a magnificent one handed catch a few inches from the ground. Wyatt occasionally hit hard during the 133 minutes he was batting. Allen followed and scored the first four off Ironmonger. O'Reilly was supei'b, pegging Jardine down to the crease. Wall had^ heaps of pep, but the English captain struck back, making some virile drives at this stage. O'Reilly had then bowled eight overs .for seven runs and secured one. wieket. The batsmen's desultoriness continued until Allen was tangled up by Grimmett at the fifth attempt to smother the ball with his pads. Three for 123. At the luncheon adjournment Jardine was 46 and Hammond one, and the score three for 130. , .Resuming, O'Reilly beat Hammond, skimming the bails. Hammond hrought off two powerful drives and then the batsman played back to the fast bowler, not attempting to score. Jardine Out The first worth while stroke by Jardine for over an hour was a leg glanee for one. Jardine made himself 52 by straight driving Ironmonger and then treated O'Reilly similarly for four. Jardine batted for four hours and 15 minutes, hitting two fours and scoring 56. Leyland brightened up play by hitting Grimmett to square leg and also cutting him to the off boundary. Hammond continued stodg'ily. Leyland brought the score to 182 by a square leg stroke for four off Ironmonger. England was now 300 in front of Australia. Leyland raised the double century by turning McCabe to square leg for a single. At the tea adjournment the score was four for 203. ' Leyland's useful innings ended at 42 after 108 minutes batting. In attempting to pull Ironmonger the ball travelled high and Will made a running catch at mid-on. Hammond was then 57, the score being five for 274. The Hammond-Leyland partnership added 91 which was invaluahle to England, and the 250 took 371 minutes to compile at the rate of 40

runs an hour. Ames joined Hammond, but the runs were mostly singles. Hammond's most attractive shot was a neat four through covers off Ironmonger which made him 68. Stolidness still characterised the batsmen who were intent on keeping the wieket intact. Hammond went to 74 by lightly tapping O'Reilly. Ames best shot was to square leg off Ironmonger, making him 12. Wall • came back at 279 and Hammond inereased his score to 83 by cutting a four and four singles. Ames reached 18 by hitting O'Reilly high to fine leg. Bradman's first ball was a full toss and he secured Hammond's wieket. It was a sensational ending to a defe.nsive 85, taking 241 minutes. He hit eight fours. The attendance was 19,821 and the takings £1538.
