MOUNT ABLBERT BUILDING NARROWLY ESCAPES DESTRUCTION
-By Telegraph — Copyrlght).
Auckland, Tuesday. A fire broke out at the back of St. Luke's Anglican Church at Mount Albert shortly after 9.30, and threatened for a period to gut the building, which is entirely of wood. The good work of-the Mt. Albert brigade, however, confined the fire to the. chancel and vestry. The damage is estimated at between £150 and £200. The fire apparently originated near the steps leading to the vestry, but the cause is unknown. The church had not been used for any service since Sunday evening. The vicar, Rev. R. G. Coates, and his family, were away on holiday, but the temporary occupant of the vicarage, next to the church, had no suspicion of anything being amiss until he received a telephone message from a lady wh'o had already broken the street alarm box. The insurances, owing to the absenee of the vicar are not available.
