DAIRYING METHODS

Evidence of the value of herd-test-ing in successful farm management, particularly during a period of low prices for primary products, and of the fact that increasing numbers of dairy farmers in the Dominion are recognising the benefits to ha herived from the work, is apparent from the results achieved by testing organisations in New Zealand last year. In a review of the work of the last year, Mr". C.' M. Hume, supervisor of the Dominion Group Herd-Testirig Federation, said an increase of about 15,000 had been recorded in the number of cows tested under the movement. During tbe last two years tbe average production per cow in the Dominion had fallen by about 301b of but-ter-fat, continued Mr. Hume. It could, therefore, be claimed with justification that the decreased use of fertiliser was a false ecohomy. It was admitted that the export of dairy1 produce had increased during the last two years, bnt the increase had been effected as the result of the increased cow population, not, as was the case in Australia, hy an increased production per cow. Had the higher exports been obtained from an increased production ' per cow, farmers generally would have been much better off as the result of the decreased cost of production. ' - - • ' -
